The Bishop's Blog: Signs of God's Grace
Blessing: a response to the ultimate curse
Posted by the Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith on June 14, 2016
It was the ultimate curse. To curse is to wish diminishment, damage or - in the case of the horrific crime in Orlando early Sunday morning, death to someone else. The 49 murders in the Pulse nightclub, along with at least 53 wounded, represent a toxic and unholy trinity of gun violence, suspected terrorism and hate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people. It was an ultimate curse of evil that has cast a lasting spell of anger, grief, fear and shock across the country. Again. Read more.

Joining God in shaping our future
Recently two important initiatives addressing different aspects of joining God in shaping our future gathered to report what they've learned. On
Saturday, June 4, the Action Learning teams presented their recommended diocesan experiments, and last
Saturday, June 11, the
Going Local teams met to evaluate their congregational experiments and plan their next steps. Both gatherings are covered in this issue, below.
Today, coaches from both these initiatives are meeting with members of diocesan staff and leaders from our governing boards and several diocesan committees to begin to distill what we have learned through the past year's work and map the next steps of our journey. This gathering will be covered in the July issue of
The VOICE Online.

Action Learning teams present diocesan experiments
Acting on a promise made at Diocesan Convention, four teams of clergy and lay leaders have developed innovative experiments to help the diocese find new ways to do Jesus' work in a rapidly changing world.
Known as the Action Learning initiative, a total of 21 clergy and lay leaders have spent the past five months wrestling with two key challenges. The diocesan staff committed in advance to taking action based on the teams' work.

By Patty Watts
We've all seen it - the little old lady who can barely see over the steering wheel, the old man who drives five miles down the highway with his blinker on, or the headlines proclaiming another senior citizen has confused gas pedal and brake pedal, and has driven into a building. Read more.

Workshop: Finding God in the Spaces, Finding Space for God
Wednesday, July 20, 6 PM At Grace Church, Nutley
We hear a lot about a Rule of Life - it sounds intimidating and deep. Guess what? It doesn't have to be! A simple definition of a Rule of Life is "God interrupting our busy lives." In other words, we should each build a sense of God's presence into our daily agendas - on our own terms.
A panel of speakers from the Empowering Action Team of Diocesan Council will share examples of their own spiritual practices in hopes that attendees will see that these glimpses of God's grace are all around us in prayer, walking a labyrinth, creating art, knitting, gardening, yoga, and more. Find out more.
