MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

June 15, 2016

From the President...

It may be summertime, but we aren't taking a summer break at MIC. We are working daily to make Mableton an even better place to live and do business!

Members of the community are always welcome to come to MIC Board meetings and in June and July we will have some special guests. On June 16th, Commission Chairman Tim Lee will be attending to share his vision in the State of the County address and on July 21st, Col. Mike Boyce, candidate for Commission Chairman, will be attending to present his vision of what he would like to accomplish if elected. (Read more about the run-off election below.)  The meetings start at 7 pm sharp and the first 30 minutes will be devoted to Chairman Lee and Col. Boyce. At 7:30, the regular business meeting will begin. Both meetings will be held at 6108 Mableton Parkway SW, Suite A, in Mableton at Quick Tax Professionals. Please join us.

Summer also makes us think about time outdoors. You will recall that in 2008 voters approved a $40,000,000 Parks Bond. This Parks Bond was designed to identify, secure and purchase precious tracts of land which are of historic or natural significance and are in danger of being developed, so that residents of Cobb County could enjoy them as parks instead.  Unfortunately, the decision was made not to collect and allocate those funds that the voters approved for green space. So now, instead of the full $40,000,000, the amount of money which can be collected will be considerably less.  In the meantime, some of those tracts of land have now been sold and/or developed, which represents a permanent loss for us as Cobb Countians. Please join us at MIC as we gather to support our parks, our families and the future of our neighborhoods and urge the Board of Commissioners to set aside and collect the full $40,000,000 that the Cobb County residents approved, when they thought that the money was going strictly to green space.

Please help us to show your support for the purchase of parks by appearing in person and wearing a solid green shirt at the upcoming Board of Commissioners' meetings June 28th at 7pm and on July 12th at 9am at 100 Cherokee Street Marietta, GA 30090.  Nothing makes a statement quite like your personal appearing at such a meeting.

Finally, please come out and support our friends at the South Cobb Arts Alliance and their Food Truck events.  They have held two so far and they were great, and I hope to see you there. In the meantime, give me a call or send me an email if you have questions or just want to share an idea. I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Joel Cope

Neighborhood Watch Update
East Mableton
The neighbors of the East Mableton Neighborhood Watch, which area includes Greer Park, Garner Road, Lane Drive, and Austin Drive/Hilltop Extension, held a quarterly neighborhood watch on May 3, 2016.    The guest speakers included Captain Hamilton, Lt. Knoblach and Lt. King from the Cobb County Police Department.

This meeting was particularly timely due to the recent rash of burglaries within the neighborhood.  The speakers helped to empower the residents with useful information regarding the prime time in which criminals operate, suspicious activities to look for, and tips for how to prevent burglaries from happening in the first place.

For further information about this part of Mableton, or any helpful hints regarding your own area, please feel free to contact facilitator of the Watch Lessie Matthews at 404-828-0273.
