Student Self- Evaluation
2016 began with an opportunity for students to revisit and review personal targets for improvement they set in August 2015. Ms. Quigley, Ms. Dolan, Class teachers and Year Heads took time with students to explore their attendance, their strengths, their weakness and help them to set realistic targets for improvement in their attainment over the next two terms. This was particularly useful for those preparing for pre-exams in February and ultimately the Junior Cert & Leaving Cert. in June. The importance of full attendance, organisation, study techniques, good nutrition and sleep were reinforced.

School improvement Plan 2015-2016
3 Targets: Embedding Literacy & Assessment for Learning practices. Developing Numeracy across the curriculum

While students were evaluating their own performance and effort, teachers too were reflecting on their practice and working towards improving teaching and learning through the promoting of better levels of literacy and numeracy across the school through a range of projects and initiatives. The sharing of learning intentions and the exploration of what success might look like in all learning situations are targets for teachers this year and will help to raise students' levels of understanding and knowledge.

Gael Linn Debating Teams - Senior & Junior teams tasted success again this year with  continued support from Ms. B  Murphy

Six students participated in Comórtas an Phiarsaigh, an inter-school debating competition as Gaeilge. St.Louis has an excellent reputation in this competition, stretching back over many years. Our Junior team was Clodagh Shine, Jessica Woodlock and Nicole Kelly. In the Senior competition, St. Louis was very ably represented by Niamh Burns, Eimear Shine and Maria McArdle. The girls were highly praised for their presentation skills

Senior Basketball
All-Ireland Quarter Final

Loreto Crumlin earned a place in the All Ireland Semi- Final scoring 111 points in their two matches, St. Louis Dundalk just missed out, scoring 104 points in their two matches.

It was a fantastic team performance all round as the players put everything into their matches: impressive passes, defensive displays and dramatic finishes. Our top three scorers were : Captain Jewell Rosagaran-48 points, Eimear Byrne-23 and Aisling McEnteggart with 15. Modinat Agunbiade, Shauni Carraher, Roisin Osborne and Laoise Grennan all found the net too but this team was not about any individual as they have been training relentlessly as a unit since September. Well done girls.

It was a particularly emotional day for the 6th year girls  as the realisation dawned that it was their last time to represent our school. Thank you girls for being such fantastic ambassadors for our school, inspiring a whole new generation of Louis students with your performance and heart. You're a hard act to follow. And remember 'trophies gather dust but memories last forever' and you have both!

A huge thank you too to all our volunteers and supporters who must be voiceless after their non-stop cheering and roaring today! Your school spirit and enthusiasm was second to none and was commented on numerous times by all the visitors and the referees today.

Senior Basketball Team 2015-2016

First Games of 2016 for Junior Teams
Well done to our first and second year basketball teams who proudly wore the Louis jersey for their first game of the season on Friday 15th January in a derby against St. Louis Carrickmacross. Despite spirited and enthusiastic performances from both of our teams, it was the Carrick Girls whose experience helped them to emerge victorious. It's said that you often learn more from a loss than a win and these girls are hungry to learn! A particular mention to Lee Lawlor (Captain) and Eryn Traynor from our second year team as well as Natasha Kearney and Kayla Byrne from our first year team for their inspired performances. A huge thank you to coaches Dairine White, Jewell Rosagaran and Roisin Osborne.

CSPE Trip to the Dáil

2nd Year students meet Senator Moran

2L and 2O had a fascinating trip to Leinster House  as part of their CSPE Action Project. They were permitted to sit in on Leaders' Questions and heard Mícheál Martin discuss the homeless crisis - there was mention of recent difficulties in Dundalk - so it was of local relevance. Senator Moran welcomed them to the Seanad and answered questions from both classes about women in politics and gender quotas. They each received a copy of the 1916 Proclamation to keep as a memento of the occasion.

Parenting Course
A ten week parenting course facilitated by Maisie Mc Guinness began in January 2016. Parents were very positive in their feedback on the experience of working together with Maisie to explore issues around parents teenage girls. As a result of its success a  second course is planned for 2016-2017. Contact Ms D Mee if you're interested in participating next year.

Le Chéile Conference 28th January

The St. Louis schools are members of the Le Chéile family, the patron body set up by the congregations to support schools in the 21st Century. The Le Chéile Conference is an annual event for management and teachers to meet and learn together. Running simultaneously is a programme for students from each of the 62 schools that belong to Le Chéile. Aimée McGuirk & Siobhan McKenna represented St Louis this year. The students worked together on projects using dance, music, song, photography & art to come to a deeper understanding of the issues around team work and coming together under the umbrella of Le Chéile.

The highlight of the conference was the talk by Fr. Peter McVerry about his understanding of Christ's message around promoting justice and peace in the world by doing what we can to support and help those on the margins or in need.

He promoted his understanding that young people will never respond to messages about  a Catholic Church that is a law-maker, instead they have an innate sense of justice and want to work to improve the lives of others. He suggested that this is the means through which we can bring them the message of Christ and through their kindness and generosity to others they will eventually move closer to an understanding of God's Kingdom on Earth, a kingdom where everybody has what they need and no-one is forgotten.

Ferdia Kelly looked back at the challenges faced in schools over the past ten years and commended all those present on their efforts to  support young people despite the pressures on resources, finances and morale. He looked forward to 2035 and presented a range of new factors that will influence the progress of Faith schools over the next 20 years e.g. demographic growth, demand for  diversity of education provision, patronage, accountability and the role of Faith schools in an increasingly secular Irish society.

The workshops in the afternoon were worthwhile and the event concluded with a wonderful presentation by all the young people of their projects and songs.

Spikeball Tournament Wed 10th February

The Louis roar was alive and kicking throughout our first and second year Spikeball tournament. It was obvious from the warm up that our teams were well rehearsed, all teams led ably by their captains - Carla McGee, Aoife Verling, Eryn Traynor and Holly O'Donoghue. Team spirit and skill were evident throughout all of the matches. Our teams had the difficult task of taking each other on as well as teams from Dundalk Grammar, Drogheda Grammar and Colaiste Cois Life Lucan. In our school we believe that hard work equals success and that was evident today as our teams placed first, third and fourth out of ten teams.

While all of our teams impressed today, a special mention to our team of Holly O'Donoghue (captain), Kayla Byrne, Emma Lynch, Hermione McAleer, Ellen Johnston, Ciara Callan and Macey Nesbitt who won out the whole tournament. The girls were impressive in all of their matches but particularly in their final against Dundalk Grammar, where they remained level headed and tactical throughout. Well done girls!

A huge thank you to Milena Salata and Zaneta Salata for all of their help mentoring the girls leading up to the tournament and refereeing today and also to Roisin Osborne and Jewell Rosagaran.Well done to PE Teachers Jenny Spain & Kate O'Byrne for their work in organising the tournament and facilitating the visiting teams.

Model Council of the European Union Competition
1st March 2016

The debate was based on a mock European Commission proposal to support Italy and Greece, by relocating migrants in need of international protection to other EU Member States. Schools were asked to adopt a stance either in favour or against the proposal and are encouraged to research and to adopt the official position of the assigned Member State. We were given the opportunity to represent Lithuania and had the pleasure to meet the Lithuanian Ambassador to Ireland before the event. She told us about her time working in Europe and encouraged the team to look for opportunities to look for compromise and common ground during the negotiations.

The standard of debate was impressive, all the young people representing the 28 member states were well-read, articulate and fully committed to the immersing themselves in the world of European politics and diplomacy. The debate was very engaging in light of the coverage of the migrant issue this week in the media and the pressing need to find solution to the difficult and tragic events unfolding at the borders of Europe.

St Louis School Orchestra

The school orchestra, under the baton of Ms R Killoran , were highly commended in the Interschools Music Festival in Wesley College on Saturday 5th of March. The group is made up of musicians from 1st-6th Yr and played "Rawhide" (the theme form Blues Brothers) in the ensemble competition. The standard was very high but our students acquitted themselves excellently.

Congratulations  to Fionnghuala Drumgoole in Second Year who was third in U14 Strings with a First Class Honours award. As this was the fortieth year of the Feis the standard was particularly high with mostly fee paying schools attending so we should be justifiably proud of our musicians.

The Orchestra also competed in Newry Feis after Easter and played  beautifully at the Proclamation Ceremony and end of year Mass and also contributed to the Music Department Recital  in May.

Many thanks to the 6th yrs who have played with us since 1st yr and a special welcome to all our budding musicians in 1st yr who have contributed much since their arrival in September.

Junior Basketball Success for  our 1st Year Team

Our first year basketball team continued their winning streak on Friday 5th March with a convincing win in the Regional 1/4 Final against Loreto College Cavan.Every member of this team stood up to the challenge today and were resolute in their determination to win a place in the Regional Semi-Final - and they did it in style! Our girls scored the first basket and even when comfortably ahead they never let up, constantly either attacking the basket or working tirelessly in defence. Kayla Byrne's spirited performance was the talk of the match with the referee, table officials and the opposition's coach all commenting on her natural ability and drive. Kayla was top scorer today, followed closely by Natasha Kearney, with Hillary Okonkwo, Ellen Johnston, Ciara Callan and Holly O'Donoghue also listed on the score sheet for St. Louis Dundalk. It is difficult to pick out individual players for special tribute after such a magnificent team performance but a special mention must be made to two girls whose fiery display of persistence in defence won them numerous possessions and often against players nearly twice their size - well done Ciara Callan and Holly O'Donoghue!

Although there were only 12 girls on court there were 21 girls on the St. Louis Dundalk first year basketball panel and the Louis Roar from the girls on the bench today was like having an extra player on the court - well done girls for your team spirit and enthusiasm!

Religion Dept. Trip to Clonskeagh Mosque

TY Show 2016 Grease

Congratulations to the TY Class of 2016, Directors, Back Stage Crew and all who supported their efforts behind the scenes. The show was an amazing success and a wonderful night's entertainment for the packed houses on three consecutive nights! The energy and commitment displayed by the cast, right to the last note, was testament to their enjoyment of the experience and the dedication of the Teachers who brought the show to fruition. Well done to all involved, it was team effort and great source of pride to the whole school community!

Multi-cultural Day 2016- a chance to share our customs, food and traditional  heritage .

The Student Council theme 2015-2016 was based on  "Inclusion" . We welcomed Teachers and students from St. Mary's Special School Drumcar to the launch  of a beautiful booklet written by students, parents, teachers and friends. The articles and stories were powerful and moving in their message about the importance of tolerance and inclusion.

St. Louis Green Committee News

In order to achieve our second green flag on the theme of energy a number of activities took place during the spring term. Energy audits conducted in the previous academic year (lighting, heating and appliance) highlighted that with both high and low cost measures we could make significant changes as a whole school.T his involved the replacement of fluorescent lights with LED energy efficient lighting as well as making minor adjustments to our heating system. The results really do speak for themselves. Gas usage decreased by 17% between Sept 14-Jan 15 and Sept 15-Jan 16. Electricity decreased by 2% during the same period. We hope to increase this to 10% in the coming academic year with your help by simply changing behaviour and turning off appliances in the classroom when not in use. In order to achieve our second green flag on the theme of energy a number of activities took place during the month of March. During our week of action students updated the green committee display board, placed stickers over light switches, created and displayed posters around the school, ran a slogan competition and increased the monitoring of energy meters. Each day an interesting fact and advise on energy usage was read out over the announcements. 1L and 2U kindly completed a litter pick. On Monday the 29th of February all first year and TY students received a talk on sustainable development from Sr. Nellie. All second year students received a workshop from Sarah Walsh, ECOUNESCO on developing a sustainable school on Thursday the 3rd of March.

We also had our 'Switch it off' afternoon were we decreased our electricity usage from 56 kWh during 9.00am-12.30 to 9kWh during 12.30-15.45. A group of 26 students travelled to the St. Louis Schools' Network Day on the 8th of March and gained knowledge on local/global issues such as sustainable development including climate change, poverty and equality. The flag was collected at an awards ceremony in the Helix in May.

Turn off the lights to keep St. Louis' future bright.

Proclamation Day celebrating 100 years 1916-2016

March 15th was a very special day when we commemorated the centenary of the  Easter Rising with the whole school and special guests from the wider community.

Geography Trip to the West

On Thursday the 7th of April, 25 fifth year students travelled to the Burren, Co Clare for a two day field study. During the first day students conducted their geographical investigation on the geology of a local area and its impact on landscape development. They performed many investigations on the Karst landscape specifically focusing on surface features such as grikes, clints, runnels and karrens. Although we got caught in the rain a couple of times it did not dampen the students spirits and they learned a valuable lesson, that they do not melt nor form a solution!

On day two of the field study we went on a tour of the Aillwee Caves. Here students observed and discussed the formation of underground features formed by carbonation (when weak carbonic acid rain chemically weathers limestone and reacts with calcium carbonate changing it to calcium bicarbonate which is carried away in solution). Students looked at features such as stalactites, stalagmites, pillars and cave curtains. We also identified some fossils in the cave. Following the caves we witnessed the birds of prey exhibition and many of the students got the opportunity to interact with the birds.
We then travelled to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher. Students got to witness true wild Atlantic weather with sea spray reaching us at observation points along the walkway. The sun made a perfectly timed appearance which allowed the fog to lift and the view to become even more breathtaking.
We were commended on the behaviour of the students many times. The tour guide at the Aillwee Caves was dumfounded by their maturity and courtesy and a credit to us all.

5th Year student Ciara McCooey went to Haiti with members of her family to build houses with NGO Haven

Haven is an Irish non-governmental organisation (NGO) which is strongly committed to empowering the people of Haiti to build strong and sustainable livelihoods.Launched in 2009, they work solely in Haiti, facilitating the provision of sustainable water and sanitation, training and education, and shelter solutions for its people.Their vision is to build thriving communities which prosper independently, and in which every person has a safe place to call home.

Niamh Shaw winner of the Sr. Clare Past Pupil Award 2016

Awards' Night May 5th 2016

The school hosted its sixth annual Awards' Night, yet again the sun shone and the rains stayed away as the school community past and present gathered to celebrate successes and achievements of the Academic year 2015-2016.

Principal Ms. Lorraine Quigley and Deputy Principal Ms. Michelle Dolan hosted the evening and welcomed all the recipients and their families. Lorraine Quigley, Principal was especially happy to welcome this year's winner of the Sr Clare Memorial Award, Niamh Shaw, as she is a former classmate of hers. Niamh is a scientist - turned- performer who hopes to become the first Irish woman in space. She spoke to the students about her own school days, shared some of her old diary entries and encouraged the girls to follow their dreams - and to do something to make them a reality. We have no doubt we will be celebrating her first space adventure within about five years.

Our current students were not forgotten of course and achievements were recognised in both Academic and Extra Curricular fields. Aisling Mc Enteggart and Insa Shahid were the joint winners of the sixthyear Academic Excellence Award. Endeavour is also recognised and the top spots in each year group were hotly contested. Gillian Hoey was this year's recipient of the Student of the Year. She was delighted and put the win down in part to a perfect record of attendance. Niamh Burns was recognised for achieving the highest results in Junior Cert 2015. Two sixth year students Shauna Armstrong and Munachi Mgbo-Okolo were recognised for their tireless efforts in the Environmental Club, which saw the school achieve their second Green flag this year.

The highlight of the evening, as always, was the presentation of the Dún Lughaidh Ethos award to Caoimhe Watters by Mary O' Connor SSL. This award is for the student who most embodies the qualities the school aims to instil in all students; respect, truth, responsibility, happiness and excellence. Principal Lorraine Quigley praised Caoimhe for her outstanding contribution to school life. The runners-up Shauna Armstrong and Aisling Mc Enteggart also received recognition for their nominations.

The Sports Department was not left out with many awards being given to Basketball, Gaelic, Athletic, and Volleyball stars. Ms Quigley commended the tireless work undertaken by those staff who trained the many winning teams in that category.

Yolanda Otabor, a sixth year student was given special recognition of her full attendance for all five years of her schooling.

The interval music was provided by the orchestra under the baton of Regina Killoran. They played Rawhide, the theme music to The Blues Brothers. Rachel Byrne, this year's leader won the choir Award this year, and Bláithín Hughes got the Orchestra Award. The Sixth Year choir "Accatastic", under the direction of Elaine Byrne sang "On my Own" from Les Miserables.

Artistic endeavours were also recognised. Éabha Short who was the recipient of the Art Award was delighted to be presented with her award by her teacher Áine Mc Eneaney.

Ms E Mc Grath provided the usual Hollywood style power point which was most entertaining. The attention to detail was impressive with individual photos of every student present. Eimear Byrne, Head Girl, and Aisling Mc Enteggart who jointly won Sportsperson of the Year, laughed as they saw the photos of their sporting achievements scroll before them on the giant screens.

Deputy Principal Michelle Dolan remarked that "our aim is to help every girl here to achieve their potential in whatever field that may be - our policy is to educate the whole person and tonight we celebrated their individuality and talents in every field of endeavour."

Principal Lorraine Quigley, herself a past pupil and former Head Girl remarked "it is an honour to be Principal in the school I came to as a student. My wish for every girl here is that they are as happy as I was and achieve their potential as I did by flourishing in this wonderful place." She thanked the staff who attended en masse to share the evening with the pupils, and praised them for their dedication and commitment to the pupils of the school.

Dundalk FC Manager Visited St. Louis

Girls at St. Louis Secondary School were all treated to a visit from Dundalk FC manager Stephen Kenny, as he dropped by to give them an inspirational talk on Tuesday morning.

The visit proved to be a great opportunity for the pupils involved as they took part in a question and answer session before getting the chance to have photos with the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division trophy and FAI Cup.

The appearance was organised by Dundalk FC and Dún Lughaidh as part of the school and the clubs ongoing community work. Dundalk FC continue to provide a series of activities at numerous schools; having already participated in the healthy lifestyles programme and delivered coaching lessons and after-school sports sessions.

Sky Living for Sport- Wednesday 11th May

Our Sky Sports LIVING FOR SPORT team have been busy at lunchtimes participating in multiple random activities focusing on teamwork and good communication, there were blindfolds, trust issues and batons, on Wednesday the 4th May the girls supported the participants of our first school run and on Friday the 6th their activities involved brute strength, gymnastic mats, sunshine and wheelbarrows!

St. Louis awarded an Active Flag -  one of the first schools in Co Louth.

A huge congratulations and thank you to all of the staff and students who participated or helped at the school's first House Run. The collegiality among all was inspiring to see as each Louis girl cheered on the next, all united by the common goal of finishing the challenge!
A special mention to Jessica Gaffey (5th year) who won the race, Aoife Verling (1st year) who placed second and Nicole McCabe (3rd year) and Julie Guinan (1st year) who placed third and fourth.

Chicago Theatre Trip

Thanks to Ms O Drumgole for arranging a theatre trip for students and staff to see Chicago in the Bord Gáis - it was a wonderful show and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Dundalk Golf Club hosted St Louis Secondary School - Golf Classic- Friday 27th May 2016

On a stunning morning last Friday the St. Louis Secondary School Golf Classic got under way in Dundalk Golf Club. The response to the Classic was described by event organisers as 'phenomenal'.
Forty seven teams representing thirty five different clubs participated in the event. The list of sponsors was outstanding and the organisers want to convey their sincere gratitude to them for their support.

Many of the participants commented on the wonderful condition of the course and a sunny day helped to enhance the experience for all competitors. A total of 10 prizes were presented by Des Smyth, Ryder Cup Vice-Captain. Des posed for photographs and signed autographs for the entire evening and the organisers are most grateful for his valued support.

During the early part of the evening the participants were entertained beautifully by pianist, Andrew Boylan from Carrickmacross. Andrew can be heard every Friday night in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. The presentation was followed by a fantastic auction ably conducted by Joanne Lavelle of Michael Lavelle Auctioneers. Centre stage was an impressive painting of the beautiful Dun Lughaidh grounds and Secondary School, by visual artist, Lucy Tormey. There is no doubt it is one of the finest schools in the North East and great credit to the St. Louis sisters for their foresight all those years ago. Lucy captured the essence of the fine grounds magnificently in her painting.
There were many lots of unique sporting memorabilia and some sensational golf offers for bidders to get their hands on, including a round of golf for 4, with overnight accommodation and dinner at one of Ireland's top links courses, Co. Louth. The round of golf for 4 at Lahinch Golf Club also attracted a lot of attention with the highest bidder snapping up a bargain.

School Golf Academy

Perhaps the best was left till last with Des Smyth announcing that St. Louis Secondary School is to open the first 'School Golf Academy' in Ireland. The academy will operate under the direction of Deirdre Smith, past Irish champion and International representative from 1999-2012. Some of the money raised from the Golf Classic will be used to help get the Academy off the ground.  It is hoped that this will help to grow the game among young girls in the north east. Under Deirdre's direction, it is hoped to expose as many young girls to the wonderful game of golf and offer them the many delights of the game. Many young people, especially girls, never get the opportunity to play golf, and as a result of this Deirdre would like to give them an opening to do so. It is hoped to develop a 'short game area' at first and to develop the facilities on a yearly basis. The intention is to use the services of a PGA Professional to provide instruction to the girls.
There was one final presentation made at the end of the night to Des Smyth. Deirdre presented Des with a remarkable painting of himself, both as a boy on the beach and the man himself in full flow. Emerging out of the sand and bent grass it captured the man himself in stunning accuracy. The painting was specially completed for the night by Lucy Tormey.

The title of the specially commissioned painting is 'Spirit of Dun Lughaidh' and it was palpably evident in Dundalk Golf Club on Friday 27th May. A huge thank you to all who contributed.
