INTRODUCING OUR REDESIGNED ROAD RUNNER NEWSLETTER!
|
|
As you all know, Mike Froess passed away suddenly in February. I wanted to express heartfelt and sincere condolences from all the members in the club to Margie Froess and her family. Mike did so many tasks for everyone, including being our Newsletter Editor. He will never be forgotten. Margie will continue to be a member of the club, and we encourage her to attend a rally whenever she can.
We've had two exciting rallies in the last couple of months; Pahrump, Nevada, and the Temecula (Pechanga) rally! These were well-attended, and I believe everyone had lots of fun.
I sent a request to all members asking for a volunteer for the Newsletter Editor position. As no one responded, my wife said she would be happy to perform this function. She also has created/managed Corporate newsletters over the years, and brings a wealth of talent in this area.
Upcoming rallies include two Canadian rallies; our 13th Annual rally in Victoria, B.C. in late July, and immediately following is Comox, B.C. Both are on Vancouver Island. Debbie and I are really looking forward to this trip!
Elections will be held at our Annual rally in Victoria. Our Nominating Committee, consisting of Dave Shehane, Juliana Geleszinski, and Debbie Shetland are tasked with discovering and nominating a replacement for Linda Blackburn, our current V.P. Rallies.
Lastly, a draft copy of the updated Bylaws, was emailed/mailed to all members in April. We have received some comments and suggestions for changes to it, so we plan to discuss this important update at the Annual rally as well.
See everyone in Canada!
-- Bob Shetland, President

Mike told me that if I booked the rally over Easter, it would be the first rally he would miss. I didn’t book Easter and today he is missing and he’ll never know how very much he is missed.
I think of Mike as the glue that held my rally together. He always came a day early and was on the spot to welcome and help with hooking up. He stayed late and made sure everyone had their belongings as they left.
One day he had been visiting us in our rig and as he left I noticed him eyeing the door, a few minutes later he was back with a screw driver, I asked what he was doing, He said, ”Fixing your door, it’s sticking so it’s out of alignment.” Mike always had a screwdriver in his pocket ready to fix any loose screw he might find on anyone’s rig. If a small part was missing he either had one or knew exactly where you could buy one. If you needed a broom, he not only had one, but did the job that needed to be done. He set up the tables and was always on hand to clear away.
He kept us all informed and entertained through the “Road Runner”. He was our photographer, editor, sergeant at arms and most of all he was our friend.
If you have only been to one rally, you knew Mike. He was the guy with the big hand shake and welcome smile; he was unforgettable.

PAHRUMP, NV Mini Rally March 31 - April 3, 2016
|
|
Fourteen coaches with 27 Chinookers enjoyed one more rally at Pahrump. This year’s rally opened with a few sad moments as we remembered our friend, Mike Froess, many members paid tribute and the conclusion was that Mike was one of the nicest guys to ever live among us. We followed up with an all you can eat pizza party delivered by the local Pizza Hut. Then as the evening cooled it was off to our individual rigs for a not so peaceful night, as the birds noisily did what birds do all night long.
Friday morning, the ladies compiled the cook book of recipes that had been received from the members and printed by Vera, while the guys sat under the shade tree and presumably talked technology and rig problems and fixes. Many games of Fast Track were played by a few members while others did what people do until Pot Luck time for dinner.
Saturday was more of the same until 2PM when we indulged in an ice cream social. Pat and Bob scooped copious quantities of ice-cream and individuals helped themselves to many yummy toppings. We hardly needed dinner at five to clean up the left-overs from Friday.
Sunday it all came to an end as most departed with echoes of,” We’ll see you at Temecula or Redding or next year.”
Bob and I enjoy hosting the Pahrump rallies and have booked again for next year. We understand that some of you have seen all you want of this desert community, while at the same time the setting of this park makes for so much privacy as a group, many of us are willing to put up with its shortcomings in order to go there at least one more time. We hope you’ll join us.

TEMECULA, CA Mini Rally
May 19 - 22, 2016
|
|
Dear Fellow Chinookers:
The Temucula Rally hosted by Bob and Debbie Shetland gets a ratting of A+.
We had an absolutely great time and the RV Park was a good choice. It was white glove clean everywhere. Beautiful park, grass, trees and shrubs, a picnic area for our group w/ a BBQ. Outstanding choice for an RV rally--Loved it--
The group had a great spot; we were all close to the private BBQ area which had shade and a wind block of trees and shrubs. We needed that because it was really windy all the days we were there.
The Pot Luck as usual was delicious, and we had music to dance to and some did. We had a lot of fun -- wish you could have all been there. Thank you Bob and Debbie for all your hard work you are appreciated.
See you at our annual meeting in Victoria Canada. Travel Safe--Linda Blackburn VP of Rallies
PS The rally in Chula Vista in December with Mary Esther and Mike hosting was wonderful and a lot of fun as well, but I forgot to tell you about the apron Mary had made for us. It was black with a Chinook drawn in red on the front with these words inside "I'm a Chinooker Cooker", very cute and useable, She and Mike also presented us w/ 2 wine glasses. Thanks again MaryEsther and Mike.

- Thursday 28 July - Free morning (Dinner with Annual Meeting)
- Friday 29 July - Departure
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The situation at the RV Park for power, water and sewer is that the facility outlets are shared on the same post for two units. This means that every second unit may have to back in to the site if they do not have sufficient power, water and sewer lengths to drive straight in and pass the lines under their unit. In most cases this may not be a problem but I recommend you bring additional lengths. Also recommend you bring good walking shoes, backpack, and some warmer clothing because the evenings could become a little windy and cool at the RV Park due to the proximity to the ocean. COSTCO no longer accepts American Express Credit Cards in Canada but does accept MASTERCARD. There is a small Shopping Plaza within a 10 minute walk distance from the RV Park. It contains a Grocery Store, Bakery, Liquor Store, Drug Store, Bank and a Dollar Store. If for any reason you are not able to arrive on your scheduled date, please advise WestBay Marine Village ASAP. We would not like to see you arrive late and have your space re-allocated to someone else.

COMOX, B.C. Mini Rally July 29 - August 2, 2016
|
|
Come and see how a small town on Vancouver Island celebrates the August provincial holiday weekend. Something for almost everyone -- arts and crafts, entertainment, a parade, a car show, boat races, a sea cadet sunset drill and fireworks! We will have a mini-van shuttle from the Cape Lazo RV Park into town for the events and for those who might be interested, up Mt Washington to our local ski resort for lunch and a ride up the chairlift to the top of the mountain to look out over the Comox Valley, the Strait of Georgia and the Coast Mountain range on the mainland. On a clear day we can see from north of Campbell River to Deep Bay in the south. Although it is about 3 miles from the RV park into downtown Comox, the two sites in town are less than ½ mile apart so walking between them is no problem.
Reservations made on your own were recommended by June 2015 because we are going to be there during their busiest weekend. Due to the hassles of processing foreign checks, attendees were asked to make their own reservations with the RV park. I will collect for common expenses (the minivan) upon arrival. The details of the park are available at
www.capelazo.com and if you identified yourselves as attending the Chinook Rally, I prevailed upon them to put us in the same area, but it is not a big deal since it is a small park and the pavilion is centrally located. The park was completely renovated in 2013 with a new store/office and new washrooms. The site prices were $35 and $45/ night. The park is located just past our home and has easy access to the beach.
Our schedule will be as follows:
- Friday 29 July - Arrival and get together pot luck in the park pavilion.
- Saturday 30 July - After breakfast, shuttle runs to the Filberg Festival (www.filbergfestival.com) for the artisans show and stage entertainment held on the grounds of Filberg Lodge (the waterfront home and gardens of one of the early Comox families). The entry fee is $15 each, and lunch may be purchased at the teahouse.
- Sunday 31 July - After breakfast, at approx 10:00, a bus run up to Mt. Washington. At 4000 ft. jackets might be needed. We will do lunching and sightseeing on the way back.
- Monday 1 August - We shuttle into town for a pancake breakfast at the marina, then take in the parade, the car show and the Build, Bail and Sail boat race which is a real hoot as you watch the teams build their boats before racing them two at a time in the afternoon (www.comoxnauticaldays.ca). Events at the marina are free, and there are many food vendors to choose from. The shuttle will run throughout the day and into the evening for the sea cadet sunset ceremony and the fireworks.
- Tuesday 2 August - Departure
