Religious Education Outreach
Dear Religious Education families, Youth &
Volunteer Leaders at UUSS,

August 24

-Rev. Roger and volunteer leaders are hosting a special Spirit Play program day with music and basic Spirit Play components. He will also introduce our first through fifth graders to the new Spirit Play space at our Home Away From Home.

Pool Party

-Our host church (SAUCC) invites UU teens and 20-ish young adults and families to come to a pool party Sunday, August 24. Hosted by Sierra Arden Church member Ann Kohl, 2710 Sierra Blvd at 11:30. Bring a bag lunch or a snack to share; there will be drinks there. There will be adult advisors there, but our UU parents will be asked to fill out a medical release form for all kids under 18, so please come by to complete one.

August 31

-Our very first All-RE Fish Bowl circle will take place. This includes Spirit Play and the youth in JHYG and SHYG. Rev. Roger is facilitating with other RE volunteers.

Mini Pool Party

-Splash party at Swanston Park for our pre-schoool kids and families, next Sunday, August 31, right after UUSS church. We are invited by Sierra Arden UCC, our host church; they will go there right after their coffee hour. Bring snacks, towels, and swimsuits. Sue Stegenga Ward is leader of the Kids' Programs at Sierra Arden. Her number: 916-599-6449.

Religious Education fall registration day!

Sunday, September 7, is the day to register your teenager, child or baby for the new year of Religious Education programs and nursery care. If you can't come to the September 7 Ingathering Worship for All Ages, I can email one to you. This form is necessary every fall for church staff and RE volunteer leaders to connect with you, to keep your child(ren) safe and know how we can best serve them. This form is required prior to Sunday RE class attendance. The first day of RE is Sunday, September 14th. The form will be available at the RE Table on your way into church.

Spirit Play Parent Orientation

After service on Sunday, September 7, parents/guardians of children in 1st-5th grades (and anyone else interested) are invited to become oriented to the practices, purposes, benefits and expectations of the Spirit Play program, which serves this age group. This Parent Orientation is important so you can know what your child is experiencing. Also, the Montessori-based principles of Spirit Play discourage having lots of adults in the room DURING a real session, other than the trained adult leaders for it. So this is your best chance to become familiar. It will be held in the Spirit Play room at Sierra Arden United Church of Christ, Room A. For more information, please contact Spirit Play Co-Champions: Carrie Cornwell or Shannon Williams

Notice to Youth - Jr. and Sr. High

This is an invitation to sit in the balcony when we have a service for all ages and this Sunday, August 24. There will not be a UUSS patio to sit on and we cannot invite you to be outside the sanctuary at the Sierra Arden church without adult accompaniment. Families with teenagers, please make sure you discuss this. Please let us know if you have questions. Thanks!

Jr. High Youth Group (JHYG) volunteer options

The structuring principle for this year is Spirituality. Volunteer Guests are invited to share their spirituality with the students in a creative and engaging way. The goals are to expose the students to a variety ways of thinking about spirituality, to let the students better know some of the adults in the community and, if we are lucky, to get the students to think about their own spirituality. If you would like more information or to sign up to be a Guest, please contact Irwin Rosenblum.

Jr. High MUUGs Retreat next weekend in Davis

If you haven't registered yet or would like to read more information about this Pacific Central District event, please see PCD UUA MUUGs Retreat.

Spirit Play training with co-creator

We are excited to offer training for Spirit Play Storytellers and Doorkeepers with Spirit Play co-creator Nita Penfold from 9 to 4 on Saturday, October 4th. Spirit Play is UU religious education for 1st through 5th graders that Nita and two colleagues developed from Godly Play and that is based on the Montessori philosophy. Nita was here in 2009 and provided this same training when UUSS first adopted Spirit Play as part of our children's Religious Education curriculum. If you are interested in participating in this training or want more information, please contact Carrie Cornwell, Shannon Williams, orMiranda.

Purchase a Carpet Square for Spirit Play!

For $20.00, your donation will buy one or more carpet squares to be used every Sunday morning by our Spirit Play group. Room 7/8 needs 300 squares to complete the floor. The endowment has generously provided funds to match any squares purchased through donations. Donations can be made at the RE Welcome Table or in the main office at UUSS.
