Creating a Culture of Health

HEAL NH welcomes Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, President and CEO of Global Policy Solutions, as the Keynote speaker for this year's HEAL Conference on Wednesday October 12th.

Maya will describe the current culture of health in our country - one that focuses on sickness instead of wellness and on wealth instead of health. She will discuss the million dollar question - How do all people get the same opportunities to be healthy?

As "activists on the ground" participants will learn steps to ensure individuals and families have the means and opportunity to make healthy choices.

Emphasis will be on approaches to successful HEAL policies that directly relate to improving equitable access to healthy foods and opportunities to be active.

A panel of New Hampshire experts will then share their reaction and help bridge Rockeymoore's vision to our local landscape. Afternoon workshops will follow.

Registration information will be sent out in August.
HEAL Community Network Team Learns How to Advocate for Healthy Food in Schools

The HEAL Community Network met in May to network, collaborate, and learn from one another the challenges and successes out in the field.

We hosted two special guest speakers, Doris Demers, Director of Food Services at Oyster River School District and Amy Cassidy, Director of Food Services for Nashua School District. They spoke to us about successes and challenges in Food Services as well as advice for those advocating for healthy food in schools.

Spotlight on the Berlin HEAL story: Success in Collaboration

Download the Berlin HEAL Case Study
NH Food Alliance featured the story about recent success of the Berlin HEAL coalition to repurpose a property on the corner of Mason and Granite Streets, demolishing a dilapidated apartment building to make room for a community garden and park in their monthly blog.

This project was unique, because the HEAL partners located in Berlin, including representatives from recreation, housing, community planning, healthcare, schools, and others, were the ones who made the decision to start a community garden.

Foundation for Healthy Communities Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Pictured left to right Steve Ahnen, President, New Hampshire Hospital Association; Shawn LaFrance, Executive Director, Foundation for Healthy Communities; and Mary Deveau, Chair, Foundation for Healthy Communities Board of Trustees address the attendees at the 20th Anniversary Event.
The Foundation for Healthy Communities celebrated its 20th Anniversary at an event held May 12th at the Bridges House, thanking all those who have contributed to the success of the organization.

More than 70 people attended the celebration, representing board members, funders, colleagues and staff who have partnered with the Foundation over the past two decades to improve the health and health care in communities.  The Foundation's work to improve community health began with visionary leaders anticipating health care reform and opportunities in New Hampshire to work better together for health on behalf of patients and communities.
Walking, biking to work linked to less body fat: study

Safety & Health Magazine:
Employees who ride a bike, walk or take public transportation to work have a lower body mass index and body fat percentage than people who drive to work, according to a study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

UNH Students are at Risk for Food Insecurity

Through their blog, NH Food Alliance highlights the research being done by UNH Student, Alana Davidson, who is currently conducting an independent research project on hunger issues among the UNH student population.

Her ultimate goal being to develop resources to make UNH a hunger-free campus.

Davidson says, "Since my discussions with the Governor's office and UNH leadership, a task force has been created at UNH to address this issue. We are currently working toward creating solutions for food insecure students that can be implemented beginning in the next academic year."

Co-benefits of designing communities for active living: an exploration of literature

To reverse the global epidemic of physical inactivity that is responsible for more than 5 million deaths per year, many groups recommend creating "activity-friendly environments."

Such environments may have other benefits, beyond facilitating physical activity, but these potential co-benefits have not been well described.

The purpose of the present paper is to explore a wide range of literature and conduct an initial summary of evidence on co-benefits of activity-friendly environments.
