NLBMDA Issues Guidance on
New Overtime Rules

NLBMDA Logo On May 18, the Department of Labor issued its new overtime rule despite vigorous opposition from the business sector. NLBMDA, among many other groups, filed comments against the proposed rule, citing the negative impacts on employers and employees alike. The rule takes effect December 1, 2016 and both salary thresholds will be updated every three years, with the first update scheduled for January 1, 2020. See NLBMDA Regulatory Guidance: New Department of Labor Overtime Rule. This and other material may also be found at dealer.org on the NLBMDA Regulatory Affairs webpage under Labor and Employment. (The entire Guide will appear in the next MLA News You Can Use.)

Industry Update

Nothing Compares 2U...
A couple of weeks ago, Irish musician Sinead O'Connor caused a media uproar when she hopped on a bicycle at her Chicagoland home early one morning and disappeared for over 24 hours. I can sympathize; I wandered off into the weeds myself last week. Read more.

Home Sales Accelerate in April... Building on the recent good news for home construction, new and existing home sales posted gains in April as the economy improved after a weak first quarter. Revised figures from the Bureau of Economic Analysis indicated that the economy grew at a 0.8 percent rate at the start of the year. Incoming data suggest the economy in the second quarter has been growing at a 2 percent rate, reversing a recent trend of weakening growth. Read more.

Topping Off the Job Market... Some people are worried. Some people are always worried, whether the news is good or bad. Which doesn't mean they're wrong. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its May jobs report Friday. The official U.S. unemployment rate (U3) fell from 5.0 percent to 4.7 percent, but nonfarm payroll employment rose only 38,000: 25,000 in the private sector and 13,000 government jobs. That's less than half of what we need each month to keep pace with the growing labor force. Read more.

Excuses, Excuses

Employee safety meetings - who needs them? It's a struggle to find reliable resources, not to mention timely and engaging topics. Then there's the challenge of rounding up workers scattered amongst several jobsites, or trying to fit a session into everyone's schedule. Soon, a meaningful safety meeting feels out of reach. Sound familiar?
