A Message from the Dean...

One Antidote to Whining
Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, "Get up and eat."-1 Kings 19:5
|
In our reading from 1 Kings, Elijah is having a rough day. A really rough day. Elijah did what most of us do in those situations: he started complaining to God; actually, he was whining. He told God that he was as good as dead and to put him out of his misery.
This reminds me of the story of the cowboy driving his pickup down an old dirt
road. His dog was riding in back of the pickup truck, his faithful horse in the
trailer behind. Suddenly, he failed to negotiate a curve and had a terrible accident.
Sometime later, a Texas Ranger came on the scene. An animal lover, he saw the
horse first. Realizing the serious nature of its injuries, he drew his service revolver
and put the animal out of his misery. He walked around the accident and found
the dog, also hurt critically. He couldn't bear to hear it whine in pain, so he ended
the dog's suffering as well.
Finally he located the cowboy-who suffered multiple fractures-off in the weeds. "Hey, are you okay?" the Ranger asked. The cowboy took one look at the smoking revolver in the trooper's hand and quickly replied, "Never felt better!"
God was a bit kinder to Elijah. What did he do?
God did not put Elijah out of his misery. The angel told him to eat something.
Really? How would that help?
It helped by bringing Elijah to reality. It helped by drawing Elijah's attention
from his own plight and to a place of simple obedience to God.
Sometimes it takes something small to pull us out of our funk and bring us to a
place where God can encourage us. Zechariah 4:10 says, "Do not despise these
small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin."
What frustration or discouragement is there in life that God would rejoice to see
a "small beginning" in?
