Market Updates
All good things must come to an end, and our vendors have let us know that this week will probably be the final week for asparagus. Luckily, all of the heat we've been having means there will be plenty of cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and pluots. Expect blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries to make an appearance this Saturday as well!

Closeup of Raspberries and Blueberries This week, we'll be joined by on-call vendors Cardamom Hills Trading Co, Portland Regular Bread, & Rossi Farms. If you missed last week, you missed the return of Persephone Farm and Thompson Farms--they'll be back this Saturday.  Blooming Goodies, Boondockers , and Glass Jade will also all be back after a week away. Dragonfly Forge will also be at market, so bring your knives and tools for sharpening!

Hollywood Farmers Market has been nominated in Willamette Week's Best of Portland 2015! Thanks to everyone who nominated us, it feels good to be in the company of four other awesome farmers markets. If you want to see HFM take the gold, you can vote for us here, under "Best Farmers Market" in the Local Business category.

Our annual Kids' Day celebration is this Saturday! The day will feature live kids' music, face painting, a seed planting activity, and a market scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt is the most exciting - every kid who completes the scavenger hunt will receive $ 2 in farmers market tokens to do their own shopping! Festivities begin at 9am.

See you at the market!

Bone Broth & Doggy Biscotti Recipes
In case you missed Lorraine Ferron's cooking demo last week, below are the recipes she handed out, describing how to make a nutritious bone broth, as well as dog treats from the softened bones. Many thanks to Naked Acres Farm who donated bones for the demo, and Gales Meadow Farm, who donated fresh herbs!

Bone Broth

In a large pot, place beef, lamb or chicken bones and cover with water, and add a small amount of apple cider vinegar, up to 1/2 cup for large batches. Place over low heat for 24 hours, then remove the broth and enjoy it in soups, sauces or as a daily tonic with fresh herbs and a small amount of salt. Discard the bones, or optionally, replace the rendered broth with water and apple cider vinegar and repeat the process again. Over time, the bones will soften as the minerals and proteins are dissolved into the broth. The qualities of the broth will change too, depending on how long the bones are cooked and what part of the animal they are from.

Doggy Biscotti

2 cups softened beef or lamb bones, grated
2 cups carrots, grated
1/2 cup parsley, chopped finely
3 eggs, blended
3 tablespoons chia seeds

Combine all ingredients and form this dough into a rectangular patty on a nonstick baking sheet. Bake at 350 ˚F for 90 minutes. Remove the patty and cut into slender lengths, turning each strip onto its side, and bake again for 45 minutes at 250 ˚F. Turn off the oven, allowing the biscotti to cool in the oven. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or dehydrate to store longer.

Garlic Whistles
Persephone Farm
These garlic whistles, also called scapes or buds, are the flowering stems of the garlic plant and its relatives. They stand up well to heat - perfect for grilling either plain (like asparagus) or with other vegetables in a marinade. For a special touch, blend into pesto.

Drinking Vinegars
Sage & Sea Farms
Deb from Sage & Sea Farms makes sure to source everything possible from HFM vendors to make her delicious drinking vinegars (or "shrubs"). The fruit comes from Maryhill Orchards, Happy Harvest Farm and Deep Roots Farm, she gets fennel from Big B Farm, and one of the more surprising flavors - tomato - is sourced from Sun Gold Farm. Stop by their booth this Saturday and taste a few shrubs!

Kennebec Potatoes
Rossi Farms
Rossi calls it the very best potato for mashing and French fries, and they're not alone in this assessment. Fluffy and flavorful, the Kennebec has been called the "new 'it' potato"!

Nordic Sport Bread
Regular Portland Bread
Peter at Regular Portland has a mission - to convince people that bread can be a meal all by itself! His bread is a Scandinavian-style sourdough rye bread that's high in fiber and nutrient-dense. The Nordic Sport Bread is a variant that includes walnuts, raisins and dried figs - just the thing to start off your  morning!
