Market Updates

Last Saturday was an amazing kickoff to the full market season, and we have many more treats in store for you this week! We're excited to welcome back Mark from Old House Dahlias, with an amazing array of dahlia tubers grown in SE Portland! House Spirits will also be returning to market after a winter away. If you missed last Saturday, you missed the debut of our season's newest vendors, Gluten Free Gem, Gelato Maestro, Pono Farms, and Tabor Bread. They'll be returning this week, along with Blooming Goodies, Glass Jade, ippai, Ken & June's Hazelnuts, Lion Heart Kombucha, Sage & Sea, Sterling Cookies, Village Crepery, and Winter Green Farm--all back after a long winter away. Marty from Columbia River Salmon had to skip last Saturday, as hungry sealions in the Columbia ate the week's catch of salmon. If all goes well, he'll be back this Saturday with wild Chinook!

A reminder as we move into the busier part of the season: If you drive to HFM on Saturday, please don't park in the Grocery Outlet parking lot unless you're also shopping at Grocery Outlet. Hollywood Grocery Outlet is an amazing supporter of the farmers market, and extremely generous to let us occupy a third of their parking lot! We can make this arrangement more sustainable by leaving the remaining parking space to Grocery Outlet customers. HFM customers are welcome to park in the Hollywood Square Building lot on 44th Ave (south of Hancock) and on the third floor of the Whole Foods parking garage across Sandy, as well as on-street parking of course.

See you at the market!

Kids' Activities this season at the market!

This May, the Hollywood Farmers Market begins its 19th season of running a weekly farmers market in the Hollywood neighborhood. During this time, we've seen a whole generation of kids grow up with the farmers market. They've met farmers, discovered unfamiliar fruits and vegetables, snacked on berries, and grown up with a greater connection to where their food comes from.

This season, we're excited that Joanna Sooper from Turnip the Heat Cooking School will be back at the Hollywood Farmers Market, leading our young marketgoers in kids' activities and demos! These activities are designed to be educational as well as fun.

This season's schedule: (mark your calendars!)

May 9 - Getting to Know the Beet!
A quick introduction to the wonders of this seemingly ugly and dirty vegetable. Did you know you can paint beautiful pictures with beet juice?

June 13 - Market Scavenger Hunt
Kids will get a scavenger hunt that will take them all over the bustling Hollywood Farmers Market. This market will also feature kids' music from Steve Cooper and Talullah's Daddy.

July 11 - What Part of the Plant am I Eating?
Sometimes we don't realize all the different parts of the plant that we eat regularly. Kids will try and learn to identify fruits, roots, leaves, seeds and stems from various plants!

September 12 - Easy Pickling for Kids
Pickling can be super easy, and a lot of fun! Kids will get to pick out their favorite veggies, and leave with a small jar of quick pickles!

Activities will run from 9:30 to 11:30. All activities are offered free, of course. See you at the market this Saturday!
