Market Updates
June brings the return of several of our longtime market vendors! This Saturday, Persephone Farm will be back with their beautiful eggs and bountiful piles of greens, and Thompson persephone's display Farms will return with sweet strawberries and cherries. If you missed last week, you missed Maryhill Orchard's cherries, peaches, and apricots! They'll be back with more this weekend.

We'll also be joined by on-call vendors House Spirits, Portland Regular Bread, &  Rossi Farms. Boondockers  is taking the week off, but will be back next Saturday. This is Old House Dahlia's  final week at market for the season, so make sure to say goodbye to Mark. As our market grows with the season, some vendors' stalls have been shifted to accommodate returning vendors. Are you having trouble finding your favorite vendor? Stop by the Info Booth, and we'd be happy to tell you where they are set up!!

This Saturday, our popular Market Medicinals series returns!  Bone broth is a perfect example of a truly delicious medicine. Make bone broth at home to deepen flavors of soups, sautees and sauces, or to take advantage of its rich nutrients. Lorraine Ferron, a student from National College of Natural Medicine,  will be demonstrating how to make nutritious bone broth at the market from 9am to 12 noon. As an added bonu s she will be handing out dog treats (after 10 am) that use the leftover, softened bones as an ingredient. Swing by for a taste of homemade bone broth and a treat for your dog!

And with school almost out for the summer, it's almost time for our annual Kids Day event! Saturday, June 13th will feature kids' music, face painting, a market scavenger hunt, and more! Check next week's Local Dirt for more info.

See you at the market!

Hazelnut Pesto!
As we move into basil season, our thoughts turn to that delicious condiment/sauce/all-purpose accompaniment - pesto! Below HFM volunteer Erin Houlihan shares her favorite pesto recipe. Using hazelnuts (or walnuts!) is a great Oregon-grown alternative to pine nuts. And remember, although a good basil pesto is delectable, you can make pesto with almost anything green replacing the basil - cilantro, arugula, sage, parsley, even snap peas!

Hazelnut Pesto recipe

1 big bunch fresh basil (about 2 C)
1/2 grated parmesan
3/4 C extra virgin olive oil
1 C raw hazelnuts, skins off, lightly toasted
2 garlic cloves

In a food processor blend together ingredients with pepper and salt to taste until smooth. Pesto keeps, its surface covered with plastic wrap, chilled 1 week or frozen 1 month or longer.
Fill Your Freezer, The Value of Buying in Bulk
InFARMation - Tuesday, June 9th
This event is being put on by Friends of Family Farmers.

Bulk purchases of farm direct meat, dairy, veggies, and value-added products benefit eaters and farmers alike. Whether transactions occur through individual or aggregate channels, there is inherent value to both buying and selling directly from farmer to eater.

Eaters procure high quality, local foods at reduced overall costs. Producers are able to sell large quantities of food, economizing time spent on each transaction and reducing overall costs to the farmer.

But, along with this savings comes the responsibility to retain the value of the product by adding "shelf-life" through preserving and proper storage.  Panelists will discuss how they engage in bulk purchase programs, either from the farmer, broker, or eater perspective.

Panel for Tuesday, June 9:
Chrissie Manion Zaerpoor, along with her husband Kooroosh, owns and operate Kookoolan Farms in Yamhill, Oregon. Kookoolan produces 100% grassfed beef and lamb, pasture-raised, organically fed chickens, pasture-raised pork, and offers a 100% organically grown CSA program. They sell directly to consumers as well as participate in various buyers club programs.
Rebecca Anderson, founder of Know Thy Foods, a Portland buyers club that serves the needs of the local community by providing healthy, fairly priced, and locally sourced food where friends, families and neighbors can shop and gather in a welcoming, friendly setting.
Beverly Klock, with her husband Clair, owns and operates Klock Farm and Nursery, a 27 acre property in Corbett offering blueberries, raspberries and marionberries. Klock Farm offers an unique U-pick blueberry membership.

Bring your friends and join the conversation!

InFARMation is FREE, open to the public and all ages! It happens every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 5:30-8:30 pm at Holocene (1001 SE Morrison) in Portland. Doors open at 5:30; Presentation begins at 6:30.

The topic changes each month but the focus is always on food, farming, policy and the connections in between.

Featured Products

Fava Beans
Gales Meadow Farm
An undersung vegetable of the late spring, fava beans have a delicious flavor in a variety of preparations. Anne from Gales Meadow Farm recommends roasting the pods whole, tossed with olive oil and salt, at 450 degrees for 25-30 minutes. As soon as they're cool enough to handle, pull apart the blackened pods to reveal soft buttery beans! This recipe also works with a hot grill, just set them on the grate and give them 4-5 minutes on each side, until they blister.

Hanging Basket Plants
Sun Gold Farm
These are ideal if you don't have much room for plants, but have at least one nice sunny spot by a window. Sun Gold Farm offers specific varieties of cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and tomatillos in hanging baskets. You'd be amazed how productive they can be!

Quinoa Greens
Boondockers Farm
This was a new one for us! Quinoa, native to the Andes, is more known for its grain, but it's actually a relative of spinach with some pretty tasty leaves! Boondockers grows it for seed but harvests some of the greens along the way. They are spicier than spinach, but not arugula spicy - a nice addition to any salad.

Camelina Oil
Ole World Oils
Are you looking for locally grown and pressed oil? Camelina is a member of the brassica family (think cauliflower) and its seeds can be pressed into oil - one that is not only high in Omega 3's, but also has a high smoke point (475*), which makes it good for saut?ing, frying, or for use in stir frys. Ole World Oils grows their camelina in Eastern Washington and use it as a rotation crop with wheat. The oil has a very mild flavor and can be used in place of other vegetable oils - so in addition to cooking, use it in salad dressings, vinaigrettes or marinades.
