Market Updates

This week at market, you'll find an abundance of fruit! Strawberries are slowing down, but blueberries, cherries, apricots, marionberries, and peaches are taking their place. YUM! If vegetables are more your speed, make sure to get to market early for some of Persephone Farm's delicate fava beans. These gems are available for only a few short weeks each spring, and last week they were sold out by 10 am!

We will be joined by on-call vendors Ancient Heritage, New Deal Distillery, Olympic Provisions, and Scoop.  Dragonfly Forge will also be back--bring your knives and tools for sharpening.

Our Kids' Day event last Saturday was a big success, with our "market sprouts" enjoying face painting, kids' music, and a kids' cooking demo led by Joanna Sooper of Turnip the Heat Cooking School! Joanna showed us how to make a simple and seasonal strawberry salsa - the recipe can be found below. This series of demos will be running all summer long, and the next one will be Saturday, July 12th! Stop by the information booth at the market for a schedule of all the summer's demos.

This Saturday is Pesto Festo at the Hollywood Farmers Market! Our festo booth will be set up in Hancock St. (where Crista the face painter often sets up) - stop by and sample some pesto as part of our first ever Vendor Pesto Contest! Try the various pestos that vendors have submitted and judge which is best. The winning vendor will win raviolis from Classic Foods!

Congratulations to Jane from Ippai for her recent profile in the Oregonian's Restaurant of the Year article! The O chose Portland's "pop-up" dinner scene as Restaurant of the Year, and included Ippai's Kaiseki Dining Series as part of that list!

See you at the market!

Pesto! Pesto! Pesto!
by Daria Colner

There is nothing quite like the amazing aroma of basil. Whether you're fortunate enough to have it planted in your garden or you pick up a bunch at the farmers' market, basil inspires delicious food. While there are many options for cooking with basil, perhaps the most ubiquitous is pesto. Not all pesto features basil, in fact many pestos featured at the market this Saturday will feature other herbs and greens. But it is by far the most popular variety and is what most Americans associate with the dish.

The word pesto derives its name from the way it is traditionally prepared - with a mortar and pestle (mortaio e pestello). In Liguria, a ceramic mortar and wooden pestle are used with a gentle turn of the wrist, which allows the taste from the basil to be squeezed out as opposed to crushed. If you aren't a traditionalist, feel free to use a food processor. While pesto is best when made fresh and added to fresh pasta, it also freezes well so you can enjoy homemade pesto during the middle of a rainy Portland winter.

If you're feeling adventurous, try experimenting with your pesto by swapping out an ingredient or two each time you make it. Substitute hazelnuts or walnuts (available year-round at HFM) for the more common use of pine nuts or try using cilantro, arugula, or even snap peas instead of basil. Some cultures add tomatoes or roasted red peppers. Give in to your wild side because with pesto you just can't go wrong!
