In the wake of recent events, this special edition of our e-newsletter is to address the Orlando shooting and ensure that you are aware of resources available. 

While I struggle to process what has occurred, and the impact on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) community and allies worldwide, I realize that many of you, our colleagues, and our students may be as well. Ben Barr, PhD, Executive Director at the Rainbow Community Center notes, "It is not unusual for LGBTQ people to feel anxiety, anger, or fear after attacks such as these."

As staff and students return to campus for summer school and in the fall, we  have the opportunity to acknowledge what happened and support those in our community who are in need of additional resources. 

There are a number of resources available, as well as relevant professional development opportunities, including: 

• Rainbow Community Center (RCC) is offering free drop-in counseling and support through June 24, 2016. Hours are weekdays from 1-4 p.m. in Concord. Support is also available at their Richmond and Pittsburg locations by appointment. Visit their website for more information.
   
• GLSEN has released a letter to educators, that provides important information regarding crisis response and national resources. I was alerted to this resource via WestEd's School Climate Connection newsletter. 
   
• The Contra Costa Inclusive Schools Coalition meets the first Tuesday of each month from 4-5:30 p.m. at RCC in Concord. All are welcome. Find out more...
   
• Welcoming Schools & Communities Summit (Flyer) - September 10, 2016 at Olympic High School in Concord. Participate in dialogue around creating safe and supportive schools, families, and communities for LGBTQ youth.
   
• Northern California Safe & Healthy Schools Conference - November 3-4, 2016 at UC Berkeley. Workshop sessions on a variety of topics, including LGBTQ, trauma-informed practices, etc.

• LGBTQ-Inclusive Classrooms Training - March 3, 2017 at the Contra Costa County Office of Education. Increase understanding and skills to create safer, more inclusive, instructional and school-wide environments.
