As I am writing to you this week, I do so with a heavy heart, in response to the terrible tragedy that occurred in Orlando, Florida. I know that people die every day, and we can never know all of the loss of life that occurs. But, when something like this happens--intentional infliction of pain and loss--and in such large numbers, it really does cause me to stop and think about what really matters in life. With this cold-hearted and sorrowful occurrence in mind, I would like to offer two simple suggestions.
First, slow down and take the time to pay attention to the emotions that your life experiences cause you to go through. All of us know that no matter how hard we try, or how well we live, we will experience pain and disappointment at some point. Thank God, most of the challenges we face can be worked out and sometimes even fixed. I also thank God that in all cases, "Troubles don't last always." However, we can no longer ignore the effect of those experiences which linger long after the trial is over (PTSD). Without a doubt, the young man who caused all of the loss in Orlando was experiencing his own pain. Stirred by a lifetime of increased agitation and dormant hatred, he took the lives of many and changed the hearts and minds of the rest of us. I am also convinced and concerned that many of us carry our "baggage," and continue to gather it until it becomes too much to bear. At that time, we also run the risk of becoming suicidal or homicidal. This is preventable! Please family and friends, I encourage you to get help! Let someone you trust help you process the emotional trauma, so you can either let it go or at least put it in a place you can manage. Please don't suffer in silence. Help is available for the asking. Don't be ashamed or afraid.
Second, take the time to affirm the people and things that matter to you. Take heed to Proverbs 27:17, "
Just as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend to show rage or worthy purpose
." Positive people will inspire you to be positive. Godly people will inspire you to use your faith to do for the Lord what is in your heart to do. Spend time with people who are doing something for the Lord.
The Orlando tragedy reminds us that we cannot take for granted that we will have time later. No, we must say what we feel and affirm those who are important to us
now
. Do it, while you still can. I love you all and wish for you lives that are full of the Joy and Peace of God.
Until next time,
