BurgBorn: Celebrating St. Pete's success stories burgborn

On June 16, get inspired by individuals and businesses born in the Burg that have received national and international recognition. Hollywood producer Will Packer will deliver the keynote address while talented leaders in tech, arts, and online businesses will present their insights during panel discussions.

The conference will be held at the Mahaffey Theater from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with a networking social to follow.

City receives 55 applications for CRA grant programs in first week cra


The city began accepting applications for the South St. Petersburg CRA TIF grant programs on Monday, May 31st and received 55 applications by Friday, June 3rd. This is the inaugural year of these grant programs and so far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Next steps will be an application review period and selection of grant recipients, who will then engage in grant agreements with the city.

New gateway signs unveiled in the Skyway Marina District smd


On May 25th, the city and Skyway Marina District hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new gateway signs in the Skyway Marina District. Three gateway signs have been installed at Bayway, across from CVS, the northeast corner of 54th Avenue and 34th Street South, and at the northeast corner of the Ceridian campus.

The Skyway Marina District has enjoyed an increase in activity over the past year with Jabil and Kobie Marketing co-locating on the Ceridian campus, Gator Jim's opening, and the reconstruction of Publix at Bay Pointe Plaza, as well as new landscaping along the 34th Street South Corridor.
City Council approves $350,000 for pilot ferry service ferry

At their June 9th meeting, City Council approved $350,000 for a pilot ferry service and authorized the Mayor to negotiate an operating agreement with HMS Ferries, Inc. The project is being funded collectively by St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties using BP settlement funds.

The ferry service will operate for 6 months between St. Petersburg and Tampa making two trips Monday - Thursday and the weekend, and three trips on Friday. The pilot project will gauge the commuter and recreational market to determine if a ferry service can be sustainable in the Tampa Bay region.
Raymond James rises onto the 2016 Fortune 500 list rj


St. Petersburg's Raymond James joined three other Tampa Bay companies, including Jabil, on the 2016 Fortune 500 list. The investment and brokerage firm rose 39 spots from #521 in 2015 to its current position at #482. Congratulations to Raymond James! 
Travel + Leisure names St. Pete as one of the five best summer travel destinations bestsummer


Travel + Leisure named St. Pete as one of the five best summer travel destinations in 2016. Other locations listed are New York City, the Pacific Coast Highway in California, Jackson Hole, WY, and Alaska.

"With an abundance of arts, food and culture, St. Pete has got it all," says writer Michelle Gross, highlighting "The St. Pete Shuffle," the Dali Museum, our farm-to-table restaurants, and of course, our many local breweries.
Makers movement hits St. Petersburg makers


FreeFab3D, a local 3D printer manufacturer tech startup, opened their new production facility at 2157 1st Avenue South in the Warehouse Arts Grand Central Districts. Mayor Rick Kriseman and St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Chris Steinocher helped FreeFab3D celebrate their grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 31st.

The opening of FreeFab3D, along with the grand opening of St. Pete Makers on June 13th, exemplify St. Petersburg's maker culture. This year, St. Petersburg was chosen as one of 13 cities to participate in a "Maker Cities" summit in Brooklyn, NY sponsored by the online entrepreneur website Etsy. The city, especially through The Greenhouse, is committed to supporting and growing its micro-entrepreneur community.

"We're really looking at it in all the ways that it can benefit our community. We really focus on individual wealth building. If we can get somebody who is not currently employed, all of a sudden we have somebody who's created their own job," says Jessica Eilerman, St. Petersburg's Small Business Liaison and Greenhouse Manager.

On June 29, from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, the city will be hosting a South St. Petersburg CRA Career Fair at Pinellas Technical College, 901 34th Street South.

The event is free and open to the public with child care provided. Join us for resume writing, training programs, on-site interviews, and more. Please help spread the word about this great opportunity!
