IMLS Announces National Leadership Grants for Libraries

IMLS has announced that in FY 15 it will sponsor two competitions for National Leadership for Libraries grants. Proposals will be accepted October 2014 and again in February 2015. National Leadership for Libraries grants are intended to drive innovation and support projects that demonstrate the likelihood of significant national impact. The October grant cycle is dedicated to proposals that support three strategic priorities: building the national digital platform; creating high-impact learning spac es in libraries; and advancing STEM learning in libraries. Public Libraries and Community Colleges:  Unique Partners

In the midst of a five-year, 10 branch library building initiative, Columbus Public Library (OH) has forged a unique partnership with the Columbus State Community College system that will benefit learners of all ages and the community as a whole. At each new or renovated branch, the college will have a physical presence that is positioned between the teen center and the homework help area. Bruce Massis, director of libraries at CSCC says, "We're strategically positioning these rooms so that it gets visibility near the audience we're looking at. There's also the adult learner and we're looking to attract them as well." In addition, every public computer will have the CSCC icon on its desktop so that enrolled students can log onto the college server. Read more.

Residents of San Antonio, TX know they have an outstanding public library. In the city's bi-annual Community Survey which gauges citizen perceptions of various services, the San Antonio Public Library is ranked the #1 with a 96% satisfaction rate for neighborhood library services. The Boston Public Library is designated as the Library for the Commonwealth and serves all residents of Massachusetts. Since 2011, the library has worked to digitize and preserve collections from 145 organizations in nearly 100 towns across Massachusetts. These digitized items will be shared online via DigitalCommonwealth.org, which is a BPL-built and maintained repository and portal where statewide collections will reside for future generations to discover.
