Public Libraries and Community Colleges:  Unique Partners

In the midst of a five-year, 10 branch library building initiative, Columbus Public Library (OH) has forged a unique partnership with the Columbus State Community College system that will benefit learners of all ages and the community as a whole. At each new or renovated branch, the college will have a physical presence that is positioned between the teen center and the homework help area. Bruce Massis, director of libraries at CSCC says, "We're strategically positioning these rooms so that it gets visibility near the audience we're looking at. There's also the adult learner and we're looking to attract them as well." In addition, every public computer will have the CSCC icon on its desktop so that enrolled students can log onto the college server. Read more.

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

A Peace-Full City

Springfield Public Library (MA) is a ULC 2014 Top Innovator for its community-building initiative created in response to the December 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School coupled with the city's own epidemic of gun violence. The Library joined with an Interfaith Council to distribute "peace flags" and carry out programs to get people talking about creating a peaceful city. The project engaged diverse sectors of the community including the Springfield Police Department, the Mayor's Anti-Violence Task Force and the City's Neighborhood Watch Coordinator. With nearly 1,300 participants the Peace-Full City initiative shone a light on the library's role as a safe community forum that fosters discussion, learning and change. From this civic rally, the "We Are Springfield" campaign emerged.

As the tragedy in Ferguson, MO reverberates around the world, a Peace-Full city is a model of bringing people together to discuss, debate, mourn and imagine a better future. Find out more.
