Green behaviours - making sustainable change

Common Thread is our FREE monthly sustainability event program.

> save power

> reduce, reuse, recycle

> cycle or walk to the shops

We know these actions are good for the planet. How can we get people to do them?

Get the tools you need to support your friends, family or neighbours to be more sustainable.

Ashlea Bartram (University of Adelaide) will talk about what makes an effective behaviour change program and give us tips on how to have quality conversations to bring about change.

What: Green behaviours - making sustainable change
When: Wednesday 6 July, 6:45pm for a 7pm start
Where: Marion Cultural Centre
Cost: FREE

A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity

Earlier this year we heard from Dani Austin (runs the website au.lowimpact.org) on Simple Living at our Common Thread event.

A Simpler Way : Crisis as Opportunity is a new film that has just been released about a small community in Victoria exploring a radically 'simpler way' of life.

Enjoy this free film online or keep in touch with the Adelaide Minimalist.org group on Facebook to hear about screenings and other related interesting articles.

'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.'
- Margaret Mead
Bulk green waste

If your green waste is too bulky for the green bin at home, you may be able to dispose of it with a tip ticket.

A Tip Ticket replaces one of a resident's two annual permitted hard rubbish collections.

A maximum of one cubic metre is allowed per ticket and entitles residents to take one cubic metre's worth (equal to a flat-packed 6x4 trailer) of materials including green waste to a selected transfer station.

Please call the City of Marion Customer Service Centre on 8375 6600 for more information and bookings.

Rare Bird Alert!

One of our local bird spotters, Lauren Butler, who regularly visits Oaklands Wetland and Reserve, could not believe her eyes when she saw an endangered Bittern bird foraging among the reeds at the wetland last week.

This shy, nocturnal bird joins Pink-eared Ducks, Buff-banded Rails and Royal Spoonbills seen on site. Has anyone else spotted these species lately?

Thanks to Craig Greer and Sam Gordon for these great shots.

Check out the other wildlife we found at the Oaklands BioBlitz.

Keep warm and save money

Retaining the heat inside your home will keep you warm and comfortable and help to reduce your heating costs.

Three of the most important factors to retain heat are:
  1. The level of insulation in your home
  2. Sealing out draughts in doors, windows and chimneys
  3. Window design, orientation and coverings
Draughts and unwanted air leaks not only make your home uncomfortable, but they can also increase heating costs by around 20%, or up to $160 every year.

Visit Sustainability Victoria website for practical tips on sealing windows, doors, cracks and chimneys - plus much more!
