What's new at Shelterhouse?
Celebrating our 40th year!
Did you know...

Recognizing the need for continuing support and services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, an Ad Hoc Committee was formed in the spring of 1988 to look into transitional housing possibilities. As a result of their vision and extensive fundraising efforts, "Bridges" was purchased in 1990. The "Bridges" transitional program continued until 1996 when it was eliminated in favor of affordable housing being constructed in the Midland community.

Shelterhouse Staff is SUPER!

Six Shelterhouse staff provided the plenary presentation at the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence statewide conference in May.  Called "Joy on the Job: How to Create an Empowered Staff," the presentation focused on shared leadership including team-building, managing stress and secondary trauma, handling conflict in an empowering way, and the empowerment of each employee.

Happy Pride Month!

We'd like to remind the members of the LGBTQ community that we are here for you, should you ever need us.

Members of the Dow High Equestrian Team volunteering at the Resale Shop!
You can make a difference. Volunteer!

Without the support of our amazing volunteers, none of this would be possible. We are so grateful for all of you who volunteered during the holidays, but we still need help in the new year! No matter who you are or what your skills are, we can use you! There is always a need for drivers, intermittent office help, and organization, as well as many other jobs and opportunities! Find out more about how you can help at our offices in Midland and Gladwin as well as the Shelterhouse Resale Shop!

The Juvenile Care Center

The Juvenile Care Center has always been supportive of the Shelterhouse Resale Shop and Shelterhouse itself, providing volunteers and promoting our cause within the community. We are pleased to announce that we are kicking off a new incentive program to give participants retail training skills!
A home is not made of wood; it is made of love and healing.

Girls on the Run, finishing strong!

The Girls on the Run 5k took place during the Dow Run/Walk and was a huge success!  Shelterhouse has been proud to support Girls on the Run in the Midland/Gladwin community for nearly 10 years! We are so excited to see the program grow as it joins with Girls on the Run of Central Michigan.

Blueprint for Safety

The Office on Violence against Women (OVW) granted Midland County one of three Blueprint for Safety grants nationally.  The Blueprint for Safety is an interagency response to crimes of domestic violence.  The Blueprint coordinates agency responses across the criminal legal system and outlines each practitioner's role and responsibilities. This unified, strategic response to domestic violence is designed to increase safety for victims and ensure justice.

The Midland County Blueprint Coordinator (Vicki Wakeman), Blueprint Advocate (Savannah Cook) and community partner representatives Mike Yelsik (Prosecuting Attorney's Office) Paul McDonald (Midland City PD) and Jessee Milks (Midland Sheriff's Office) flew out to St. Paul Minnesota on March 28 th to meet with Praxis International for four days and the other grantees for intensive training on how to begin the first steps of blueprint and implementation of the project.  During the training, participants shadowed their St. Paul counterparts to see the blueprint in action as well as other St. Paul Criminal Justice programs.
