Rosacea Awareness Month is Upon Us
|
The National Rosacea Society (NRS) designates April as Rosacea Awareness Month to educate the public on the impact of this chronic and widespread facial disorder now estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans. In fact, even though 1 in 20 Americans have rosacea, most people with it don't even realize they have it. It occurs most commonly in adults age 30-60 years of age. It tends to occur more often in women than men.
The good news is that rosacea can now be effectively controlled with oral and topical medication therapy, V-Beam Laser and lifestyle changes by recognizing trigger factors. A growing number of medical therapies are now available that can be tailored to each case and substantially reduce the impact of rosacea on people's lives.
People often delay treatment, thinking they have a temporary condition that will go away quickly. Rosacea is reported to worsen with time. The sooner treatment is started the better.
Individuals with any of the following warning signs of rosacea are urged to meet with their dermatologist for a diagnosis and to discuss appropriate prescription based treatment:
- Facial Redness or flushing of the cheeks, nose, chin and/or forehead
- Small visible blood vessels on the face
- Bumps or acne like pimples on the face
- Watery or irritated eyes
