In the Summer, In the City
Our Oasis
Jefferson Market Garden
Linda Camardo photo
What a summer! Every day, Garden
visitors from our community and from far around the globe express their appreciation for the lush beauty and peace they find here.
Of course Mother Nature has been kind, but behind the scenes our visionary Horticulturist/
Garden Designer Susan Sipos has been directing our dedicated Monday Garden Volunteers to plant, prune, weed, deadhead and sweep.
All our thriving flowers, shrubs and trees require hand watering in addition to our irrigation system. This takes constant attention and muscle. We thank them all for their hands and hearts that helped to turn our winter-damaged Garden into the luxuriant verdant oasis we now see.

In order for admirers to experience the Garden from inside as well as outside, a corps of volunteer Gate Greeters spend two or more hours a week keeping the gates open, welcoming our visitors and answering questions.
To add to our visitors' experience, Eric Oxendine offered classical guitar two afternoons a week.
In a special event in early September, Bill Thomas displayed his fine art photos and cards in a Garden Art Exhibit to benefit the Garden.

At the same time, many more unseen volunteers prepare publications, create and maintain our social media, donate photos and art work, staff weddings and other Garden events, and our Board Members work on collaborations with other community organizations.
We appreciate the time and skills that so many of you give to the Garden.

A special shout-out goes to noted weaver and ceramicist Marianne Yoors who has again organized an opportunity for visitors to adopt a pot from Greenwich House Pottery
on September 20th & 21st. The pots will be on view at a special opening event on Friday, September 19th.

Garden Events for Children
An important component of the Garden's mission is to provide free educational opportunities for community children. During the school year, local school groups participate in Garden field trips led by Alexis Camp. This Spring Christine Gros chaired the always successful Children's Festival of Flowers and will chair our Fall Children's Harvest Festival
on Saturday, October 11th.
Bring children for free pumpkins from
Citarella! Free Crafts and Games provided with the assisstance of 6th Precinct's NYC Law Enforcement Explorers Troop, Post 2206 at the 6th Precinct led by Celines Lebron, and several Garden Volunteers! Free entertainment provided by Frank Collerius and the Jefferson Market Library!
Now, with the support of TD Bank , we have added a new free music program specifically designed for children: A Children's Garden of Music by the Borough of Manhattan Community College Faculty Ensemble under the direction of Howard Meltzer, on Sundays, October 12th & 19th at 2 pm.

Our Garden flourishes because of all the support we get from our community in the contribution box, checks in the mail and from those who attended our first annual fund raising event hosted by Carlos Suarez at Claudette and chaired by Elizabeth Butson.
Hurray for Garden Volunteers, Gate Greeters, individual donors, foundation and business contributors, and everyone else who gives time and talent to our amazing Garden! During the past 40 years, the alchemy of your support has transformed a rubble-strewn lot into our glorious Garden for the community. We thank you all!
and the Jefferson Market Board Friends' Garden Party 2014 Enduring Beauty Since 1975 The Women's House of Detention(1938 photo) was demolished in 1973. Its debris filled the empty lot. The community rallied and Jefferson Market Garden opened in that space in 1975.
