Greetings!

Hello!

2013 has been a fantastic year thus far for Upton Bass, and since it's been a while since we've sent one of our Upton Reports, I thought it would be a perfect time to let everyone know what we've been up to.

This year, we honed down our UB built basses to six models: the Bohemian, Brescian, Mittenwald, Karr, Bostonian, and Concord. All of these instruments are available in several variations and can be upgraded.  Click on the feature block below for more details.

The ISB was a huge success this year. We won two awards- one for show favorite, and another for craftsmanship for the 4/4 Gary Karr fully carved bass we entered into the maker's competition. Plus, we got to hang out with good friends Harvie S, Eric Revis and Lynn Seaton to name a few!

After countless phone calls and emails from customers searching for an affordable, quality laminated bass, Gary decided to build just that. We are happy to announce that we are now offering a Standard Bohemian laminated bass! It's a "no frills" instrument with a nice dark varnish and a 50/50 pizz arco setup which includes D'Addario Zyex strings and bridge adjusters for only $2500! Check back soon for a link to this bass and more details.

Lastly, big changes (space-wise) coming for the Boston shop in the near future...read more below.

As always, give us a ring if you have any questions and thanks for your continued support. Wishing you a great (rest of) 2013!

Pollmann Gamba Double Bass

Pictured here is a Pollmann "Gamba" model fully carved double bass from Michael and Ralph Krahmer, Mittenwald's fourth generation Poellmann master bass builders, built 2004. Outrageous wood pattern pops out from every angle, while the Spruce top is deeply arched and hand contoured. This beautiful, comfortable instrument would shine in solo or chamber music settings with a clear, present and detailed arco sound.

John Juzek Prague Double Bass

This John Juzek Prague double bass (c.1930) is a classic Gamba cornered 3/4 size in great repaired condition with a new bridge (not done by Upton) and Pirastro Obligato strings. The back and sides are of lightly flamed maple and the top is fine grained sprice. It has a wonderfully warm and punchy pizz tone with nice articulation under the bow.

UB Bohemian Makore Special Double Bass

This UB Bohemian was specially crafted for the 2013 ISB show in Rochester NY, as a celebration of our Bohemian model and as a showcase of what we can create with exotic woods.

The back, ribs, neck and scroll were carved from solid curly Makore wood (aka "African Cherry"). The finished Makore shimmers with a remarkable three-dimensional "plaid" and delivers a very dark, punchy sound in a relatively compact package. This very unique fully carved instrument eagerly awaits its first owner.

Big Things Brewing in Boston

Stay tuned for big news on the Boston shop. We're currently looking at bigger, better spaces in the Back Bay areas to expand the showroom and workshop. Soon, our entire collection of used/new/vintage basses (and even a few custom built Uptons) will be housed under one roof!
