Hello!

Hope this finds you well and gearing up for the holiday season. Only a few weeks away! We've had a nice response to our weather changes/caring for your instrument newsletter sent last week. After sending I promptly had a bass come in with a large top crack...hate to see, but hate more that it could have been prevented! If you have additional questions, we encourage you to call or email us.

This installment of the Upton Report features a twice-repaired bass, a summary explanation of laminate vs. hybrid, a pair of upgrades, and finally, a quick pic of the progress of the hand-made UB German bow!

Thanks for reading, and as always, don't hesitate to contact us with any questions. We love hearing from you!

The Case for Proper Repair
The owner has had two accidents since buying the bass from us in 2005.  The first time the neck broke out and he brought it to someone else to have it repaired.  They slapped some glue in and clamped it up.  It was a cheap repair done cheaply...and it was destined to fail.  The owner had a slight bump with it, nothing that should have cause a healthy neck set to fail, but the neck came out again (taking some top pieces with it!).

This most recent time he brought it back to us to do right.  Examining it, there was nothing mechanical about the heel shape to keep it secure going back to the original maker.  Couple that with lots of spruce damage from the last repair, and there was even less mechanical coupling and just some very inadequate glue holding it together.

It was decided that the neck heel had to be reshaped to form a "dovetail" and the spruce block would have to be restored so that the properly shaped neck could be chalk fit into place.  We took this opportunity to modernize the set as well, increasing the over-stand and correcting the corresponding projection.

After careful touch-up and adjusting the setup, the bass plays more comfortably into thumb position, and with a properly shaped and fit neck, the owner can rest easy over every bump in the road!

Laminate vs. Hybrid, Explained.

The central difference between a laminated and hybrid bass is the top. The body of a laminated bass is solid plywood, while the hybrid has plywood back and sides and a fully carved spruce top. This may sound like only a small change, however it is the top that makes all the difference in tone. Laminated basses tend to have a dark, thumpy warm tone with a lot of boom, but lack clarity. Hybrids also offer a lot of low end, but the tops pump and vibrate more, resulting in a dynamic sound with a complex range of tonal color and articulation. In short, hybrids "speak" better than laminates, and only get better the more you play them. They are excellent for jazz and classical, while laminates are better for blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and rock.

With regards to UB builds, we offer both the laminate and hybrid in the Standard and Bohemian pattern, but also build hybrids in the Brescian, Mittenwald and Karr (pictured above) patterns. Please feel free to email/call with any questions you might have and to discuss which model would suit you best.

The UB Deluxe Spruce Top Upgrade

The single most effective upgrade for your UB Bohemian Hybrid! Hand graduated and arched for optimum toneEnhance the tonal capabilities of your Upton Bass by adding a Deluxe Top!

A Deluxe Top begins with careful selection of domestic Sitka Spruce, brought down to our standard thickness.  Each plate is further hand graduated by our award winning head luthier, Eric Rene Roy, for optimum tone. The arching is low and powerful with a strong recurve into the purfling, allowing for a plate that can freely "pump" and produce wonderfully rich low tones on the E with a balance throughout the register ending in a sweet, clear note on the G string.

The Bow is Coming Along...

Two weeks in, and the bow I'm making is starting to shape up! Slowly chipping away at it (no pun intended!) in between customer calls, instrument auditions and instrument repairs and hoping to have the stick finished around Christmas. More to come! I'll be blogging about this as I go and will post pics on the Upton Blog.
