Ethan Sobotta of Touch and his UB Bohemian Laminate

Check out this awesome clip from PBS's KCTS9 program featuring proud UB bass owner Ethan Sobotta and his Bohemian Laminate. Seattle band Touch is influenced the French gypsy jazz that became every popular in pre-war Paris. The featured song in this clip is "Minor Swing" by Django Reinhardt.

Robert McIntosh Double Bass
Built in 2009, from the "Cuite Spruce" series

This bass is the "Cuite Spruce Series #1 of 3," Cuite referring to the structural contractor from whom Robert procured the spruce.  The beams of a mid-1800s building were being replaced with steel in order to install a pool on the roof... Rob salvaged the original beams of Sitka spruce, now well over 150 years old, yielding enough to make the tops of three instruments! Two have been made so far.

The back and sides are made of mahogany, with a flame maple neck and mahogany scroll.  Beautiful handworked wood throughout, lightweight and extremely resonant giving a very eager response and cello-like clarity in the higher registers. 1927 Alois Bittner Bass Restoration
A recent top replacement and restoration done in our Mystic shop

Here's a 1927 Alois Bittner bass that we have been familiar with over many years. The top is exceptionally thin especially in the upper bouts and has been cleated and repaired to the limit. It came back to us as a new crack appeared, but after careful examination the top arch is failing and the bass bar has let go. At this point, a plaster cast could be made Andre top patched (a veneer applied, but that would make it in effect a laminated top). There was also the extremely long turn around time and great expense involved, factors that did not work with for the current owner.

Considering budget and the heavy use of the instrument, our customer opted for us to build a new top for her beloved Bittner. With some peace of mind that the top was no longer fragile and a time bomb, she could focus her energy on practicing and performing, and as the original top was kept, it can accompany the bass if any future owner decided to tackle the restoration job.
