City Announcements & Activities
Greetings from John Hall, City of Wichita | Housing and Community Services Department Director...

I want to announce my excitement about the City's inaugural housing expo, "Making Dreams A Reality."  Whether you need rental or homeownership information, there will be something for everyone!
There will be repair demonstrations for homeowners.  Vendors will provide resources to make home improvements, and the City will have information on the paint program that is now available until September.
For those seeking to purchase a home, lenders, realtors and City staff will be on hand to provide services to help achieve homeownership.
For renters, the City will sign residents up for Public Housing and housing vouchers.  A call for large families needing four, five and six bedrooms - there are immediate availability!  So come out to the housing expo or call 462-3730.

The housing expo is on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Century II Exhibition Hall from 10a-3p and is being sponsored by Capitol Federal. More information is listed on the flyer below.
Is your home ready for a fresh coat of paint?

  2. Eligible household income must not exceed eighty percent (80%) of median income.
    • Family Size
  3. The house must be owner-occupied, and real estate taxes must be paid current.
  4. The owner must apply the paint to the structure within six months of receiving it.
  5. Senior citizens, 62 years of age or older, may qualify for labor grants, provided they are owner-occupants and provided funding is available.
For more information or to apply for paint, call (316) 462-3713 during the paint program period.

Water Conservation Rebate Program

The City dedicated another $100,000 to the Water Conservation Program this year. Beginning February 1, water customers became eligible to receive a rebate for switching to high efficiency appliances and other water efficient devices: such as HE washing machines, dishwashers, toilets and smart irrigation controls, rain sensors and rain barrels. In the first 30 days of the program, nearly $30,000 in rebates have been awarded.

In order to keep you informed about important issues in your community, Westar Energy will be initiating another phase of work improving/upgrading transmission lines in the northeast section of the City.  These improvements are a part of a continued effort to improve service delivery and help reduce/eliminate electrical outages.

The transmission line work will be done along 17th Street from Oliver to Woodlawn and Woodlawn to Rock Road.  Westar, through agreement with the City, will be moving their easement approximately 10 feet to the south along the Redbud Trail. City staff have met to discuss what trees will be impacted as a result of this move.  It has been determined that a small number of low value volunteer trees (Red Cedar and Siberian Elm) may either be trimmed or removed during this process. The alternative plan considered increases the easement to the North which would severely impact a great number of trees and negatively affect most adjacent private properties.

WESTAR ENERGY: WICHITA TRANSMISSION UPDATE (JUNE 2016)

As Wichita State University and the surrounding communities grow, their need for energy grows. Westar Energy has identified transmission projects that are needed to ensure the campus, surrounding neighbors, and all of Wichita has plenty of reliable electricity. The line being upgraded along 17th street will improve service to the university and surrounding area.

New power line standards require Westar to utilize wider easements than when the line was originally built, so Westar is purchasing nine homes on 17th near Oliver. Six of the homes are ready for demolition, pending a historical review by the city. These homes are slated for removal later this month.  The remaining three homes are still in the process of being acquired. Once the homes are removed, entry drives and driveways will also be removed. We will plant grass and fix any curbs, sidewalks and gutters along the roadway to match the existing curb and gutter.

Residents may observe contractors who are "potholing," which allows us to ensure we know where underground utilities are in the area and don't interrupt service. Construction of the transmission line is scheduled to begin in January and is scheduled to be in service in June 2017.
Officer Bussard and HUD Staff
A message from Sargent Brunscheen...

"I was meeting with HUD at Calvary Towers on 6-10-16.  Detective Bussard was off work and getting ready to leave town with his family.  HUD asked if he could stop by so they could give him something.  Edward Manning is the Director of the Kansas City HUD Office and shaking Troy's hand in the picture.  He and Daisy said the Wichita Police Department has been the best Law Enforcement agency they have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.  They were very impressed with Detective Bussard's great communication and flexibility while he assisted them as they dealt with all the problems at Calvary Towers.  Troy was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation."
