The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self-Compassion
In her TEDtalk, Author and researcher Kristin Neff describes how self-esteem can be a protective factor against challenges. At the same time, the way we develop our self-esteem can be problematic. Self-esteem can depend on a person feeling special and above average. Additionally, self-esteem is relative and conditional. We can use it for comparison, creating difference, bias and blame. At the same time, self-esteem is conditional, so its there when we are doing great, but it abandons us just when we need it, in our moments of pain.

The Art of Self-Compassion |
This month, I shared my personal reflection on self-compassion on my
blog. I hope you'll find something that resonates for you in those words.
Its been said, "
we are very attached to our suffering." And much of our suffering comes from our own self-criticism. Granted, these can be internalized messages from our past, our childhood, and even our current experience, but as with the practice of mindfulness, we may not have control of our circumstances, but we can choose how we respond to them.
One practice you might try is the self-compassion break. When you find yourself in a moment of difficulty, stress, or challenge, offer yourself these words:
This is a moment of suffering.
Suffering is part of the human condition.
May I be kind to myself in this moment.
May I give myself the compassion I need.
Gently repeating these phrases to yourself triggers physiological and emotional changes that can put you on the path to healing and self-care.
|
The Elements of Self-Compassion |
Self-Kindness - Providing yourself with the compassion and self-soothing you deserve
Common Humanity - The understanding that you are not alone in your suffering, that it is part of the human experience
Mindfulness - An awareness of what is actually happening in your lived experience.
