"There is no greater agony than bearing an
untold story inside you."  --Maya Angelou

Boy, do we love summer at Mighty Writers. Sends us right back to childhood.

Water ice. Double dutch. Shooting hoops in the moonlight. Summer crushes.

Oh, those summer crushes.

Smiles just come easier in summer. And there's a soundtrack to summer. Music floats through the soft summer air everywhere you go, especially in Philly, where sound emanates from cracks in the sidewalk.

At Mighty Writers, we like being in on the summer action. Doing summery things for our Mighty kids, always with writing in mind of course.

This summer, we've planned a doozy.

We're going to set a record. A world record.

Most kids writing at the same place at the same time.

The topic they'll all be writing about: "If I were President..."

Our goal is 3,000 kids.

Snap, right?

Here's the info:

We'll be telling you lots more about our Mighty Record event--which we've timed to coincide with the Democratic Convention--in the coming weeks.

A few words on why we doing it:

One, literacy is in crisis. We'll spare you the city's grim dropout rates. You've heard them before anyway.

Two, writing, which we believe has the power to save lives, has become a forgotten skill.

Why craft a sentence when u kn txt?

The Mighty Record will shine a light on literacy and the importance of knowing how to write with clarity.

But the biggest reason?

To celebrate Philly kids.

Philly kids write with heart. They're razor-sharp thinkers, natural storytellers and no one's better at sprinkling prose with colorful street-wise turns of phrase.

They deserve a day in the summer sun.

Woo-hoo, Philly kids.

Can't wait to tell you what they would do as President.

Keeping it Mighty in the summer sunshine,

Tim Whitaker, Executive Director
