Municipal Elections Tips & Tricks
Several SUMA staffers had the opportunity to attend the Urban Municipal Administrators Association of Saskatchewan's Election Workshop in Regina last week. Here are some takeaways from that event:
- The Ministry of Government Relations, Municipal Advisory Services will be closed Friday, July 29, the day before resort village elections on Saturday, July 30. Resort villages: make sure to get your elections questions answered at least two days before election day.
- All urban municipalities - with the exception of resort villages - are obligated to run advance polls. New this election: Any eligible voter is entitled to vote in advance polls. There is no longer a need to declare a reason for being unavailable on election day.
- Elections officials are in charge of making sure forms are filled out and procedures are followed, but the responsibility ultimately rests with candidates and voters to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements for running or voting.
As mentioned, election day for resort villages is Saturday, July 30, 2016. All other municipalities go to the polls Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Visit our new Elections Forms Hub to download and print your own elections forms, notices and posters, like this multipurpose 11"x17" directional arrow.

"Best Place to Live in the Prairies"
MoneySense magazine last week confirmed what SUMA President Debra Button has been saying for years: Weyburn is the best - or at least the "
Best Place to Live in the Prairies" according to the publication's
ranking of 219 Canadian cities and towns
. The annual exercise is meant to compare quality of life according to a host of indicators, including affordable housing (a category that Weyburn scored within the Top 10 nationally), crime rates and severity, income, unemployment and access to healthcare. Weyburn ranked 28th overall in its first year to be included in "Canada's Best Places to Live."
Eight other Saskatchewan cities were ranked this year: Regina (33rd), Moose Jaw (58th), Saskatoon (68th), Estevan (97th), Yorkton (100th), Swift Current (108th), North Battleford (113th), and Prince Albert (186th). Swift Current was noted for having the lowest estimated unemployment rate in the country, at 2.5 per cent.

Paint Recycling
Did you know Saskatchewan has a paint recycling program, operated by Product Care Association (PCA)? This not-for-profit organization works on behalf of paint manufacturers and retailers.
PCA contracts with all 72 of the province's SARCAN depots, plus selected retailers to collect used paint and empty paint containers.
Better quality paint that is collected is made available to the public for free at SARCAN depots. Unuseable paint and paint cans are responsibly recycled.
Residents can be directed to PCA's
ReGeneration website
which lists
where and what you can recycle in the province.
