Dear GISH PICKS or SPIRIT PICKS reader:

I am reaching out to you in the aftermath of the horrific tragedy in Orlando because it is the worse mass shooting in American history and I felt it was important to help out by giving you information. I stand with the LGBT community that was targeted and my heart aches for all of us. I pray for a better world and my mantra right now is the Hebrew phrase "Tikkun Olam" -- repair and heal the world. I am all about igniting lives through culture and the exploration and expansion of oneself and it my belief that this is where peace begins: within. Please take a moment to center yourself and find peace and love before taking any other action. We won't all agree on a solution but I hope you will join me in spreading the word that #LOVEALWAYSWINS.

Below are a few ways you can help immediately:

  • Donate blood. The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will be filling local needs first and then once there is a surplus, they will send our blood to Orlando if needed. Click here for information about donating.
  • Say a prayer or send healing thoughts. That can be done from anywhere, but if you want to stand in community, there is a vigil from 6-7pm tonight (Monday, 6/13) at the Montrose Center, located at 401 Branard Street. More info is here.
  • Help the Pulse nightclub victims directly by donating to this GoFundMe page that is dispersing funds via Equality Florida.
  • Join Mayor Turner at the city's vigil at City Hall at sundown on Wednesday, 6/15; he has lit up City Hall with rainbow colors in honor of the LBGT community. Stay tuned to his plans by LIKE-ing his Facebook page, here, or by subscribing to the Houston CitizensNet, here.

It is always my goal to ignite lives and create connections which is why I share information about culture for kids and adults and about day camps for children. People who are ignited and connected choose love over hate. It's my way of changing the world.

Thank you for helping Orlando however you can,

Sarah Gish
