Unanimous NBA MVP Stephen Curry broke out of his playoff shooting slump in convincing fashion on Friday night, scoring 38 points as the Golden State Warriors overcame the Cleveland Cavaliers, 108-97, in Game 4 of the Conference Finals. The Warriors now lead the series, 3-1, and Game 5 returns to Oracle Arena on Monday night, at 6 p.m., where the Warriors hope to win their second straight NBA championship on their home floor. But intrigue clouds a probable Warriors victory as defensive specialist and inspirational leader Draymond Green has been suspended for a flagrant-1 foul committed in Game 4, a kick to the groin of LeBron James. Can the Warriors overcome Green's absence? Photo by Rich Yee.

The San Jose Sharks hoped to replicate the feat of a young fan by lifting their own trophy over their heads but they fell tantalizing short on Sunday evening at SAP Center, losing Game 6 and the Stanley Cup playoff series 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. While falling short, no San Jose Sharks team has ever advanced so far into the finals during their 25 years of existence. A proud salute to the San Jose Sharks. Photo by Kenneth Wong.

He's baaaack . . . San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, seen here last year against the Green Bay Packers, participated in mandatory three-day drills last week, and was quoted as saying he's happy to be a member of the 49ers. Telling reporters about his conversation with new head coach Chip Kelly, Kaepernick said, "All I've heard is Chip has told me it's going to be a competition ... and to come in and be ready to compete. That's going to be my mindset and I'm excited to do that."

When the solo male racers in the 35th edition of the Race Across America (RAAM) begin their 3,080-mile bicycle race from Oceanside, Calif. to Annapolis, Md. on Tuesday, they may be wagering on the closest battle in RAAM history. Both recent winners Severin Zotter and Christoph Strasser are out this year, leaving four riders who have all placed second within the past decade: Marko Baloh, Sovenia; Gerhard Gulewicz, Austria; Mark Pattinson, UK; and David Haase, USA. Haase (above) was second last year and vows to trim at least 9 hours from his 2015 second place time of 8 days, 20 hours. "Being top American last year was nice," he said in Oceanside on Sunday. "But I want to be the top American and winner, too!" If successful he'll be the first American winner since 2003. Photo by Vic Armijo / RAAM Media.

Dare to Dream: How James Madison University Became Coed and Shocked the Basketball World
By Lou Campanelli
and Dave Newhouse
|
Former Cal basketball coach Lou Campanelli and local veteran sportswriter Dave Newhouse have co-authored a book chronicling Campanelli's accomplishments as a successful collegiate basketball coach. Campanelli started in 1972, when he arrived at a small teachers college known as Madison College in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The name was changed to James Madison University and Lou built the basketball program into national prominence before coming to Cal and returning the Bears program into a Pac-10 winner.
Co-author Dave Newhouse will be making the following appearances: Saturday, June 25, Castro Valley Library, 2 p.m. (general author talk); Saturday, July 23, Montclair Library, Oakland, 3 p.m. (general author talk).
The book can be ordered at Amazon.com and at bookstores.
