Welcome Back!
German International School Chicago started its sixth year on Wednesday, August 27, welcoming 85 students (ranging from preschool through fourth grade) and 14 teachers. We now have three preschool classes, a Kindergarten class, a 1st/2nd grade class, and a 3rd/4th grade class. Welcome to all returning and new students, teachers, administrators and families!

New Classrooms
With the continued growth of the school, we have now expanded to use all the rooms in our 1447 W. Montrose building! In addition to the spaces we added last school year, we now have three classrooms, a music room, an art room, and a meeting room, all on the second floor. Special thanks to our school director, teachers, and Board members for their hard work over the summer getting our building and these new spaces ready!

New After-School Programs
GISC is also now offering an expanded list of after-school programs: (1) Chess -- taught by Keith Ammann, president of the Chicago Chess Center and a US Chess Federation-certified Local Tournament Director and Chess Coach; (2) Piano -- small group instruction in GISC's new Music Studio is taught by Herrn Thomas Gunther, who holds a teaching position as Jazz pianist, composer and orchestrator at Columbia College; and (3) Karate -- Christopher Scatera from Villari's Martial Arts Center teaches Shaolin Kempo Karate two days per week.

Von Steuben German Day Parade
A huge number of GISC parents and kids supported GISC in the Von Steuben German Day Parade in Lincoln Square on Saturday, September 6. Families enjoyed riding on our float and handing out candy to the spectators lining the parade route, and many families stayed after the parade to enjoy the German Day festivities.

GISC's Aqua-Agenten
GISC's 3rd and 4th graders are participating in the project "Aqua-Agenten in Chicago", a science project developed by the Michael Otto Foundation for Environmental Protection in Hamburg in 2010 and supported by the Goethe Institut in Chicago. The goal of the project is to make students aware of the importance of water for people, nature and business. Our students will cooperate with students from Chicago's Hayt Elementary School and a school in Hamburg, Chicago's sister city. See the GISC website for more information.
