I love Vinho Verde in the summer. It's light, quaffable, and bracing. Some, however, are better than others. In the wrong hands it can be little more than washed-out, fizzy juice. This one, from producer Anselmo Mendes, is the good stuff. Vinho Verde, which translates to "green wine," is named such because it is best when fresh and young. It comes from the very northwest corner of Portugal, across the Minho River from Spain, a very lush and green area with rolling hills.

While usually a blend, this bottle is 100% Loureiro, a slightly aromatic grape variety with lower alcohol and refreshing acidity. This wine has lovely fresh, floral nose of white flowers and citrus. Tons of minerals, peach, and citrus fill the palate, with precise, cutting acidity. Vinho Verde is a perfect summer aperitif to serve before dinner, but I'll be drinking this while working in the garden and lazing around the house on a hot day. Try serving it with light salads or shellfish.

Cheese Pairing: Crottin de Chavignol, Loire Valley, France

$4.99/each

Our resident cheese monger, Laura, recommends pairing this wine with the Jacquin Crottin de Chavignol. This simple goat cheese from the Loire valley of France will pair perfectly with this Vinho Verde because they are both acidic and tangy. The crottin will not overpower the wine, but will provide a smooth and creamy palette cleanser that will make your next sip even better. Enjoy on your porch as a delightful end to a warm day.
