Marika Townshend Travel Grant - Deadline February 16, 2014
PCPI members - individuals, schools, councils - are eligible to apply for a travel grant to attend our PCPI Annual Meeting. Schools and councils may sponsor teachers, staff, board members or other interested members. With questions please contact [email protected] and application forms available now on PCPI website.
PCPI Annual Awards - Deadline March 1, 2014
Please consider nominating an outstanding teacher, board member, or co-op member who has made a special contribution to your preschool community for one of PCPI's special annual recognition awards. Nomination forms available shortly on our website or email [email protected].
Katharine Whiteside Taylor Bursary - Deadline March 15, 2014
This annual education bursary is available to teaching staff in Canadian parent cooperatives, or school members who are pursuing training in the field of early childhood education. To apply please see website or email [email protected] and see below for information about the two 2013 winners!

PCPI Annual Meetings - Washington, DC All Welcome! April 24-26, 2014 PCPI's annual meetings are such a valuable place to network, meet, teach, learn and grow the cooperative spirit within all of us to build strong communities and happiness all around!
Please join us in April as we celebrate together and highlight our Northern Virginia Member Co-op Schools. Join Canadian and American teachers, board members, co-op parents and other members for education, camaraderie and fun - watch our website for details - coming soon!
Calling all members - PCPI needs your help! Annual membership fees do not cover all the programs PCPI provides to our members, we also benefit from donations to make a big impact. At PCPI's annual meeting in Portland, Oregon in April 2013, we brainstormed some great ideas that our member schools have already started to implement to help support PCPI's ongoing programs. Won't you join them? A great goal is to have PCPI member schools set aside one fundraiser a year to help continue such worthy programs as the Marika Townshend Travel Grant and the Katherine Whiteside Taylor Bursary, as well as the many other ways PCPI helps support member schools. Some of the ideas we came up with include a dedicated restaurant night for parents, and putting a change jar out at your school labeled Pennies for PCPI. In Memoriam Dorothy W. Hewes, Ph.D., one of the great champions for all children of the world, died on January 30, 2013. Dorothy was professor emerita in Child and Family Development at San Diego State University. She was involved with early care and education for more than 60 years through a wide variety of California programs. In 1972, she was co-author of the first preschool administration textbook, An Administrator's Handbook to Early Care and Education.
Dorothy had unflinching and enthusiastic commitment to the cause of early education. In particular, she was best known for her interest in the history of early care and education and for her support for the Convention on the Rights of the Child. At the 2008 conference of the International Froebel Society, she was presented with an award by their president, who said, "Froebel is known as the Father of the Kindergarten and Dorothy is known as the Mother of the History of Early Childhood Education."
Frances Meyer Webber, co-founder of Multnomah Playschool, Portland in 1948, died at the age of 92 on June 2, 2013.
Frances Meyer and Maggie Webber worked together many long years ago to bring the idea of a parent cooperative preschool to life in Portland. Multnomah Playschool was their idea and remains their legacy, some 65 years later. At the time, MPS was one of just a handful of parent cooperative schools in the nation.
Other Cooperative School News 2013 Katharine Whiteside Taylor Bursary winners: this PCPI bursary provides financial support to assist in the continuing education of parents and teachers currently participating in a Canadian cooperative or parent participation preschool. Last year we had an extremely strong field of applicants and for the first time, the committee decided to award the grant to two individuals who were equally deserving.
Teresa Wilcox, teacher (and former parent) at The Alisa Craig and District Cooperative Preschool in Ontario is completing her Early Childhood Education diploma. She used the bursary to help with tuition.
Nicola VanHeyst from North Vancouver, B.C. is a teacher at Lynn Valley Parent Participation Preschool and is also a former parent of the school. KWT Bursary funding helped Nicola attend the "Good Stuff for Kids" Conference in California in July. This annual conference is hosted by internationally known educator Bev Bos and Nicola was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn first-hand from this outstanding expert. "The Good Stuff for Kids conference in Sacramento was everything I hoped for and more and I have come home with lots of wonderful ideas and am feeling very inspired. I would like to thank you again for the bursary support." said Nicola.
