November, 2014

From the Director

As Thanksgiving approaches, it's a good time to reflect on things we're grateful for.

At BACOA, we're especially thankful for the generous community that supports our services and programs. Thanks to the help of individuals, foundations, churches, businesses, and local government, older adults and their families get information and resources that they need to help meet the challenges of aging. Your generosity helps older adults find a Medicare D plan that saves money, lines up essential services for a homebound senior, and guides family caregivers through tough decisions. This month, we'll be sending our annual appeal to the community - we hope we can continue to count on your support.

We have a little extra to be thankful for this year. As you know from our last Senior Advisor, we have expanded "A Day Out," our day respite program, to two days a week. We'd like to thank all of those who have made this program possible, and especially Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Robert and Kim Albrecht, Wheat Ridge Ministeries, and the Barrington Area Community Foundation who have provided so much to launch this important program.

"A wonder to experience"

BACOA and The Garlands of Barrington will host a special screening of the award-winning documentary Alive Inside on Tuesday, November 11 at 7 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center at The Garlands, 1000 Garlands Lane, Barrington.

Alive Inside, directed by Michael Rossato-Bennett, chronicles dementia patients around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers interviews with experts including neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks and musician Bobby McFerrin. The film won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Dan Cohen's group, Music & Memory, trains elder care professionals how to set up personalized music playlists on iPods for dementia patients. These musical favorites tap deep memories and can bring patients back to life, to converse, socialize and stay present. One critic called the film "A wonder to experience." (See the trailer here.)

Reservations for the film's screening are requested by Friday, November 7, as seating is limited.  Suggested donation is a new or gently used iPods or a gift toward the purchase of iPods for Music & Memory. For more information, or to register, call BACOA at (847) 381-5030.

Good work!
BACOA's helping hands

Every day, BACOA volunteers put their many skills to work, helping seniors and caregivers through our services and programs. Who are they - and what do they do? This month, Senior Advisor introduces a new series of profiles on BACOA's volunteers.

He's a member of the Illinois Mycological Association, he's currently reading the book, Curious, and he is a four-year BACOA volunteer. Ed Mosteig knew that he wanted to volunteer for an

organization where he would interact with people and learn new things. BACOA welcomed Ed with open arms.

Ed has helped seniors by advising them on Medicare D options, making sure hot lunches are delivered to homebound clients who enjoy a friendly visit from him, assisting early memory loss individuals through "A Day Out," the day respite program at Lutheran Church of the Atonement. When asked what keeps him volunteering for BACOA, Ed replies with a big smile "the seniors and the BACOA staff"
