Life Sittings Opening Reception
Saturday, June 11, 2016 * 5-8pm
Engine Room Art Space 36 N Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740
Kate Miller has an expressionistic portrait style reminiscent of Alice Neel's. In Miller's own words she explains "I didn't discover Alice Neel until I was in my thirties, which I think is just as well. Any earlier and it would have looked like I was imitating her. When I saw her work, I definitely felt like I had found a colleague. Here is someone with a very unique voice who loved to paint people she knew." Miller has been painting portraits of subjects during live sittings for about four decades. Many of her paintings depict the same people through various stages of life. It is quite interesting to see the voice of the artist evolve simultaneously with the subject over a long period of time. Miller's paintings are consistent in their strong sense of expression, but vary greatly in color scheme and tone, perhaps because of her staunch commitment to painting in the moment.
