Fall is in full swing - we found many groups of sparrows feeding out in the open and hordes of Yellow-rumped Warblers chipping in the surrounding foliage.  Many trees still have much of their leaves, so warbler viewing was a bit tough.  It was fun watching Red-shafted Flickers forage in the soil - not only are they the largest woodpecker in Southern California, it is the only North American woodpecker that you will find regularly feeding in that manner.   The surprising miss for us was Ruby-crowned Kinglet, as these birds are basically everywhere at the moment. I even had one after I got my pre-walk espresso in the Starbucks parking lot!
