Our Lawyers in Singapore Prepare for the 2nd Annual CPD Training on Cross-Border Litigation for Migrant Workers

Greetings from JWB! The first half of this year is almost past, but I am happy to say that we have made amazing progress, both within the organization and on our mission. We saw amazing growth, from adding staff in Singapore to incorporating in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, we continued to build the infrastructure needed to increase the availability of legal support for migrant workers across our region.
Our own expansion parallels our continued work developing the lifelines to legal aid that migrant workers need, both abroad and at home. We have been hard at work developing the capacity for front-line organizations to identify and develop cross-border claims for civil compensation, and to equip lawyers with the knowledge and know-how they require to successfully carry a case from start to finish, even when the worker has left for home.
I am also happy to report that we have delivered concrete successes, supporting two test cases that successfully settled with compensation to workers who faced abuse at the hands of their employers. We are also in the process of developing multiple new cases in both Hong Kong and Singapore, which build upon the knowledge and know-how we have developed in both jurisdictions to date.
As we move into new frontiers of the law, we recognize that it is only possible because of the contributions and support of the investors, partners, and volunteers who work with us every day.

Hong Kong Update: Identify Claims for Workers Returning Home
JWB began active case work in Hong Kong from this January, following the publication of our Practitioner's Manual for Migrant Workers. This next phase of our work to develop transnational access to just compensation will lead to test litigation that will expand the field of possible claims for victims of labour exploitation and human trafficking. Our Hong Kong work reaches over to Indonesia as well.

Recent Developments: Second Edition of the Singapore Practitioner's Manual Now Available!
JWB is proud to announce the launch of the Second Edition of the Singapore Practitioner's Manual for migrant workers. The revised edition addresses recent notable changes to the law in Singapore affecting migrant worker litigation. The Practitioner's Manual has also been translated in Bahasa Indonesia, thanks to support from the Tifa Foundation. Read More
