Coalition Supports US News STEM Solutions Conference

The STEM Education Coalition is proud to announce its support of U.S. News STEM Solutions 2014-The National Leadership Conference, taking place in Washington, D.C. from April 23-25. For the third year, leaders in education, policy and workforce development will convene to advance the national STEM agenda.

How Well are American Students Learning
Brookings Institution
This year's Brown Center Report on American Education represents the third installment of volume three and the 13th issue overall since the publication began in 2000.  Three studies are presented.  All three revisit a topic that has been investigated in a previous Brown Center Report.  The topics warrant attention again because they are back in the public spotlight.

Who Needs to Know How to Code

Like many 10-year-olds, Nick Wald takes private lessons. His once-a-week tutor isn't helping him with piano scales or Spanish conjugations, but teaching him how to code. Nick, a fifth-grader in New York, went in with no experience and has since learned enough HTML JavaScript and CSS to build a simple website.

President Obama introduces Fox's 'Cosmos' with Push for STEM Education and 'Discovery'

When the science television program "Cosmos" relaunched Sunday night, those tuning into Fox were met by a familiar face at the show's opening: President Barack Obama, InTheCapital reports. Taking advantage of the show's reboot, Obama introduced "Cosmos" with a shout out to its original host, Carl Sagan, all the while promoting his administration's STEM education efforts that align with the show's themes of exploration and discovery.
Why Women Are Essential to the Future of US Manufacturing

Manufacturers regularly and consistently report a shortage of skilled and semi-skilled workers for their firms. Shortages are most pronounced for skilled production workers, scientists, and engineers, and least evident for unskilled production workers. Unemployment in this sector is already below the national average (5.6 percent versus 6.5 percent), but the US Department of Labor reports that there are about 300,000 job openings in manufacturing. Estimates based on employer surveys tend to be higher than this figure.
