Memorial Sign Honors Mr. Tim

When Enadel Gonzalez hit a slow period in his work as a welder in 2009, a friend referred his wife Elvira Cigarroa to Anna's House to help provide supplemental groceries and help the family to make ends meet and feed their two young sons.

That year, they were adopted by a family who provided Christmas gifts so that their two children, David and Alex, could have a special Christmas. Two years later, during the summer of 2011, Elvira, David, and Alex showed up at their sponsor family's house with a beautifully-crafted bench. Enadel, is a hobbiest wood-worker, made the bench as a thank-you gift to the family who had sponsored his family for Christmas.

Five years later, David is a sophomore at Arsenal Technical High School, and Alex is in eighth grade at Harshman Middle School, a magnet school in the IPS network. Both are strong students. Elvira says the programs offered at Anna's House are very important to the community. She specifically values the English classes.

The family still has a strong connection to their original sponsor family. The family has hired Enadel to do some woodworking on a couple of projects they have, including making a reading bench for the school where the sponsor mom works.

Enadel and Elvira value giving back to their community. David volunteers some Saturday mornings with grocery distribution. When we were looking for a way to honor Mr. Tim, our beloved community member, volunteer, and board member who passed away in 2015, we asked Enadel to craft a memorial sign. He refused to let us pay for the sign, which now sits at the southeast corner of Elder Ave and New York Street, in the pocket park Mr. Tim helped to create.

Director's Note
It's a Wonderful Life

This year marks ten years in Anna's House! We will be celebrating this summer with our 10th anniversary gala - An Evening in Paris, at the Lucas Estate on June 24. Tickets are on sale now. Join us to hear more about our past 10 years and our future while supporting the vision we are working to implement!

We're continuing to seek support for our new community center through partnerships with local businesses for in-kind, financial, and volunteer support. We are so grateful for all who have stepped up already.

Starting June 13, our summer breakfast series will be returning thanks to our generous weekly volunteers. We expect to serve 100 individuals each morning over the summer. We will also be gearing up for our backpack and school supply distribution. You can sponsor a backpack full of school supplies for just $20. Check our website for more information.

Also returning this summer is Common Ground Ministries, excited to work on home repairs in the neighborhood and offer a Vacation Bible School camp. They'll be here June 20-24. Our kids always love this week of crafts, skits, and Bible stories!

We're always looking for some additional hands during our grocery distribution through the summer months. With the vacation time, we often have fewer groups come out to volunteer with us. It's a great time to bring your family or friends out to work with us!

We're excited for another busy summer of relationship-building among the families we serve in the Near Westside neighborhoods!

In Christ,

Scott & Laura McNulty

Scott and Laura McNulty have been long-time supporters of Anna's House. It all started with their connection to the Molloy family. Laura served as a doctor to Anna Molloy when she was in the hospital at Riley, but their relationship grew as they moved into the same neighborhood and began attending St. Jude, where the Molloys attended. As their families grew closer, the McNulty family also began to get involved with the street ministry of The Lord's Pantry, at a time when both Lucious and Anna were involved.

Laura says, "My husband and I feel it is vital for our children (and ourselves for that matter) to witness the way Julie and so many of the others give selflessly and tirelessly to promote and encourage people.... The Molloys 'took us into' their family several years ago. So, it is the least we can do to help out as we have over the years; albeit pale in comparison to that of others.  The chance to share food on Saturdays, play and share in the joy of Christmas with a large family like our own, give to someone who is trying to do better for themselves seems like the right thing, the natural thing to do.  It gives me great hope and confidence that God provides for all of us in our time of need."

Along with their own contributions of monetary donations, Christmas sponsorship, and volunteering, Scott was able to connect Anna's House to his employer, who matched the financial contribution they made at our Never Say Never: An Evening in Monte Carlo fundraising gala last spring.

Volunteer Spotlight
Alejandro (Alex) & Barbara DeGortari

Alejandro (Alex) DeGortari spends two hours each week at Anna's House teachin g English classes. He says he loves knowing the people and watching their successes keeps him coming back each week.

Alex first got involved with The Lord's Pantry when Lucious visited his church, St. Luke. He and his wife, Barbara, came to help with grocery distribution before there was a building.

Originally from Mexico City, Alex was a logical connection for teaching English as the community began to see more Hispanic residents moving in and seeking to integrate into the community. We asked Alex about offering English classes about five years ago, and he stepped up. He has been teaching English to an average of 8 people a week ever since.

Alex loves watching people succeed in learning a new language. One woman, he said, didn't know how to say "Yes" when she started attending his classes. Two years later, she was able to obtain U.S. citizenship.

"I really enjoy seeing the people improve on their language," Alex said. "I think the people who come here for class are amazing. They're in a completely different country. A lot of them don't have families. And yet, they incorporate into the culture here and make a living."

Barbara DeGortari continues to be involved with grocery distribution on Saturdays.

We are so grateful to the DeGortaris for all the work they have done to serve our families for more thana decade!
