African Spirituality with the shaman Malidoma Somé

A Water Ritual - Grief

Reserve your ticket HERE.

Grief is felt every time something contradicts our sense of humanity, separating us from our sense of identity; it is a dramatic event creating a crisis of the soul requiring reconciliation. Emotion is the most natural response and grieving has the same profound strength that love holds, in its shadow side. We are, however, conditioned to suppress and repress these powerful emotions and hold a stiff upper lip through adversity and pain. We have been told that time heals all wounds, and yet we carry a heaviness of heart. It is as though the grief holds us back from experiencing the lightness of spirit and our degree of participation in life.

Grieving vents the soul - it is not to be confused with weakness or vulnerability. Emotions are collective and affect those within our community, much as a smile can bring warmth to another, grief can bring sadness to another within that community. Grief is released as layers of loss, requiring a lot of energy. One member of your community can trigger suppressed grief within you hence, the community contributes to your process.

In the Dagara community (African indigenous wisdom), grief is seen as the food for the psyche. Just as the body needs food, the psyche needs grief to maintain its own healthy balance. Holding back unexpressed emotion and tears is like a time bomb; both dangerous to ourselves and to the world around us.

Many of us have reservations about connecting on a deep, emotional level as we have been immersed in a society of logic and reason, yet we truly need to look at what we are LOSING IN OUR LIFE when we choose not to grieve. Emotions sit within our bodies on a cellular level and this can now be mapped with incredible precision. Our bodies require the freedom of flow within; not just the physical flow of oxygen, nutrients and blood but also energetically. When a blockage remains within a region of the body for extended periods, it impedes the natural flow, becomes toxic, and creates disharmony/imbalances of mind and disease of the body. Dr. Malidoma Som é, Dagara Elder, author and international spokesman, travels internationally teaching the wisdom and healing of his community. He expresses that "grief is a community problem because the person who is sick belongs to the entire community. Just as the wound on your leg cannot be approached as the leg's problem alone, but must be treated as a problem for the entire body, a person in the village who is sick with grief, sickens the rest of the village."

We are at a critical juncture in our evolution, it requires full out participation to feel the freedom of mind, body and spirit again. Join us in releasing our grief in a community-supported environment led by Dr. Malidoma Somé.

Johanna M. Hofer ( J.M. Hofer lives in Salt Lake City, where she works in the travel industry to slake her wanderlust, and enjoys studying languages, mythology, ancient history, and Celtic lore.
Her first novel,  Islands in the Mist, was chosen as one of the top  five semi-finalists out of two thousand entries in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror genre in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest. The second book in the series, Across the Sea, was released November 17, 2015.
Johanna finds inspiration in taking her readers on a "journey outside the "real" world to worlds that exist beyond its borders."
"Having written two novels, and working on a third, I've created a world and characters that provide a structure for me to express everything I find important and fascinating in life," she said. "Each character's personality provides a different opportunity to explore a different facet of life--their emotional world, their dreams, fears, challenges--both the writer and the reader get to engage in this journey of creation and escape."
Johanna has been writing for most of her life. "I started keeping a journal at age 12, and have been writing in some form ever since," she said. "Writing has served as cathartic therapy, a record of my life, a way to explore new thoughts and ideas, and as expression of what is most poetic about who I am."

The Art of Cowry Shell Divination with Malidoma Somé
" Malidoma Somé is a West African Shaman, writer, and inspirational teacher. He holds three masters degrees and two doctorates from the Sorbonne and Brandeis University. The  Jung Society of Utah will welcome Malidoma this  June 24-26 for a special lecture and workshop to celebrate the Season Finale of year 7. During the Friday evening talk he will offer insight into how we can discover our individual gifts and true purpose, and during the weekend workshop he will show us how we can come into our authenticity by way of facing our grief through  ritual.

Malidoma was born into the Dagara people in Dano, Burkina Faso. His own name Malidoma, means "he who makes friends with the enemy/strangers." Malidoma believes it is his destiny to come to Western audiences and promote an understanding between Western and indigenous cultures, and feels his own calling is to bridge these two worlds together.

Malidoma says the Dagara believe that each person is born with a destiny, and he or she is given a name that reflects that destiny. Malidoma champions the gifts of the individual and believes in the power of community and that, "A person's purpose involves the commitment to search for and find the lost harmony that was once the holding energy that kept village and earth together." He believes that  ritual  is necessary for returning ourselves to this original harmonic state of natural community.
