Some quick background...
Last year, Connecticut passed a bill mandating at the time of new vehicle sale that the dealer provide to the customer a printed explanation of the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act-a law that makes it illegal for motor vehicle manufacturers or dealers to void a motor vehicle warranty or deny coverage under the motor vehicle warranty simply because aftermarket or recycled parts were installed or used on the vehicle or simply because someone other than the dealer performed service on the vehicle.
This simple provision, which we are sponsoring in California, would inform consumers of their Magnusson-Moss protections and prevent dealers and automakers from taking advantage of their ignorance.
As you may expect, since word of our draft language made the rounds in the California legislature, the OE and dealership community quickly started lobbying against us. Thus, we strongly urge you to reach out to shop owners and other auto care contacts in your network to help us compile specific examples of any possible violation of this law. From what we've heard, most shops experience this fairly often so we don't anticipate that it will take too much effort on your part.
While the incidents can be anecdotal, it would be very helpful if you could include as many details as possible. This information will play an important strategic role in our lobbying efforts moving forward.
