JUNE 2016

You're here for Delaware's children and families.
We're here for YOU!
Early Childhood Credentials Update!
DIEEC and the Office of Early Learning are working together to update Early Childhood Credential requirements. As community-based and higher education coursework offerings change, we are reflecting those changes in the Credential pathways. All possible pathways will now be listed together for each credential, with a master class list of accepted coursework in a separate document.  Updates will go into effect on July 1, 2016 to the DIEEC website  . If you have questions about previously submitted transcripts or training, please contact Veronica Commodore.

Scholarships will be announced and applications made available on a first-come, first-served basis to qualifying Stars administrators. What Can the Foundations of Curriculum (FOC) Series Do For You, Your Program and the Children and Families You Serve?
Watch A Video of Providers Talking About What the FOC Series Did For Them!

The Foundations of Curriculum is a 4 part series designed to support programs in Delaware Stars (center and Family Child Care Star Level 3, 4, or 5) to use curriculum in more intentional and meaningful ways.  The series consists of four 3 hour monthly professional development sessions followed by onsite consultation designed to meet the specific needs of your program.

During the series you will define your program vision,  explore ways to engage families in their child's learning and how to intentionally teach children throughout your daily schedule.  Watch a short video, where providers who have participated talk about the impact of participating in the Foundations of Curriculum series.

For programs in Delaware Stars at Star Levels 3, 4, or 5 there are opportunities to participate in the Foundations of Curriculum series ( click here for an application):

Essential Standards for Delaware Stars Programs: Curriculum & Assessment
Program Specific Guidance Documents Below
Essential Standards provide a quality improvement framework, additional resources and supports to sustain quality for Delaware Stars programs, early childhood program staff, and most importantly, young children and their families. Essential Standards were announced early in 2014 along with additional financial support (tiered reimbursement of 93% for SL4 and 102% for SL5) and additional professional development, tools and technical assistance, for programs serving infants, toddlers and preschool aged children.

Essential Standards are necessary for programs moving to Star 4 or 5, or re-verifying at Star 4 or 5. Three Essential Standards are already in effect for all programs in Stars- child development screening and child formative assessment, and Administrative Credential for ECE Directors. In July 2016, the 3 Essential Standards that come into effect are:
  • Early Childhood Curriculum (all SL4 & 5 programs in Stars)
  • Child Observation & Assessment (Star Level 5 programs only)
  • Curriculum & Assessment Credential (SL4 & 5
    ECE centers only)
(note: please see article on Early Childhood Credentials Update in this edition)
In preparation for meeting and verifying for these essential standards for programs serving children birth through age 5, school age only programs and for programs serving both, please click on the appropriate document below.  You will find the relevant program standards, information to meet verification, and resources available to support your success in the following Essential Standard Guidance Documents:

Please contact your TA or email [email protected] if you have any questions.

Program Spotlight:  Helping Hands FCCP
Family Engagement & Child Directed Learning
Bridget Williams is the owner of Helping Hands, a family child care program in New Castle. For much of the day children direct their own play, and Bridget and her assistant followed their lead.  This builds on the child's individual interest and creates opportunities for intentional teaching.  Bridget created a felt story board, and cut out shapes including suns, stars, cars, animals, and people.  The children pull out shapes, placing them on the board and create a story.  Watch the video below and after a few minutes, you will hear Bridget asking questions about the story he's telling.  Her questions help him think about his story all the while building his literacy and imagination.

Bridget uses an over the door shoe caddy from the Dollar Store as her system to collect and track individual child observations ( click here to see the photo gallery).  It is located where families enter and it prompts her to share progress and goals with them daily. This daily sharing involves parents in their child's learning and provides them with ideas for activities they can do in their home.

Have You Been Asked to Update Your PD Profile?
There is a really good reason!
The Professional Development department is requesting new information to update your profile. When logging onto www.dieecpd.org or calling 302-831-3239 to register for a workshop, you will be prompted to update your profile with demographic information. It will be kept securely in our registry to provide current information so we can better meet the needs of the early care and education workforce.

This information is used when planning, developing and scheduling to provide high quality professional development opportunities for each and every professional in our state. We are constantly working to provide better workshops, to include content that is specific to your role and to give you the tools you need to cater to each and every child in your program. We can only do this if we know more about YOU!

It is also important for us to know how to get in contact with you, so up to date contact information, including email address is crucial.

We appreciate your time and patience as we work to gather everyone's information.
