The Arc of New Jersey Executive Director Tom Baffuto and Second Vice President and parent Kevin Sturges testified before the Senate Education Committee in May, in support of legislation that would limit the use of restraint and seclusion in schools. This is an important piece of public policy and a high-priority agenda item for our organization. 10 Tips for Ending the School Year

1. Visit the new school or classroom.
Will your child make a major transition next fall? Will your child be moving from preschool to kindergarten, from elementary to middle school, or from middle school to high school? Plan to take your child to visit the new school or classroom before the first day of school.

2. Review your child's IEP and progress.
Did your child make progress this school year? Did the school properly implement the IEP? Does the IEP adequately address your child's needs? Do your child's Goals prepare your child for further education, employment, and independent living?

Navigating the System
Respite: What is it and how to access it  

Respite care is a service meant to support the family. It provides unpaid caregivers with a temporary break from caring for a loved one. Research shows respite helps caregivers sustain their health and mental well being. It can help avoid or delay an out-of-home placement and can reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. Studies show that respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce. Respite provides a positive experience for

Employment: How to Access Support Services
New Jersey One Stop Career Centers

Are you looking for a job? The New Jersey One-Stop Career Centers are the place to start.  Located throughout New Jersey, One-Stop Career Centers offer services (free of charge) to help individuals develop the skills needed to succeed. Services include: 
  • Jersey Job Clubs offer the tools and support necessary to find a job. It helps individuals develop new skills and builds up already existing skills. There are 23 local Job Clubs and six statewide industry-specific talent network Job Clubs throughout New Jersey.
  • Career Beacon Job Search Readiness Workshop: One-Stop Career Centers offer a variety of free workshops to help job seekers gain skills needed in the workforce. 
  • Job Fairs: One-Stop Career Centers also host job fairs throughout the state to connect employers directly with job seekers.
