Excellent rolling greens are calling all golfers to support people with disabilities by playing in the 2016 ProAct Golf Classic at Southview Country Club on August 15.

Eagan parent/guardian meeting highly interactive

A group of more than 65 parents and guardians assembled at ProAct in Eagan for an update on system changes, and to share their views about the best services for their loved ones.

One father said his daughter, who is a participant, works in a job off-site, takes classes and works on ProAct's production floor.  "That's what works for her," he said, noting that there is fear out there that programs like ProAct's will be taken away.

Program Director Carolyn Dobis took the crowd through a summary
Carolyn Dobis
of the many systemic changes ProAct has encountered over the last two years.  State licensing reviews have been extended dramatically, she said, and there are many terms and program names for people to learn about, such as the Olmstead Plan, 245D, Positive Practices and WIOA.  Her presentation can be viewed online.

Steve Ditschler
"We are being progressive while maintaining a range of service options to meet individual needs and accommodate informed choice. We embrace competitive integrated employment, while recognizing that one approach does not address individual differences" said CEO Steve Ditschler.  As one parent said: "One size doesn't fit all."

The number of people on off-site work crews in the Day Training and Habilitation program has doubled this year, Dobis said.

The group is expected to meet each quarter, and may host industry speakers from the state and county who could answer questions.  Watch ProAct's website and Facebook for the next meeting date.

Participant planned: Life Ops 50s party in Hudson

The 1950s returned to ProAct in Hudson, where a recent party event brought together families and individuals with disabilities for live music and dancing. Custom made poodle skirts featured personalized designs and decorations and party planning was performed by program participants and staff. "There were tons of choices throughout the process, " said Program Coordinator Margaret Christensen.  Prior to the event, several made their way to Fantastic Sams, which provided 50s hairstyles without charge. Party favors and decorations were on display throughout the building and drive-in themed burgers, hot dogs, fries and root beer floats were served.
