HIM: Right Here, Right Now
Thank you to all attendees for joining CHIA and the CHIA Board of Directors at the Convention & Exhibit. This year's event was a huge success and we hope to see you again at next year's show in Sacramento, CA to celebrate the "Power of Health Information". Some of the several highlights from this show were:

On Monday morning, Lt. Colonel Patricia Murray encouraged attendees to Run Your Own Race and Let the World Chase You. She described her compelling story from Miss California to becoming a Lt. Colonel and Instructor Pilot for the California Air National Guard where she flew over five tours of duty in the Middle East. To run your own race, she described several principles:
  1. Know who you are;
  2. Identify what stops your forward progress;
  3. Recognize life is our greatest teacher;
  4. Decide what you stand for;
  5. Back your decisions with the confidence of your life's experiences even when you don't have confidence;
  6. Keep it in perspective;
  7. Are you a mentor; and
  8. Be a mentor. In her inspiring message, she reminded all attendees that you too, can rise from "Crown to Cockpit."

Also on Monday, Aaron Beam, former Chief Financial Officer of HealthSouth, described how he spent time in federal prison for contributing to accounting fraud at HealthSouth. Humbly he inspired members that doing the right thing is the right thing to do. Quoting Saint Augustine, 400 AD, "Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation," he encouraged attendees to always put ethics first.

Tuesday, 2016-2017 CHIA President, Deborah Collier, RHIA, emphasized CHIA's mission statement "To advance the management of health information through networking education, shared knowledge and advocacy". She called members to action and encouraged them to meet and learn something new, connect using social media and engage by networking.
AHIMA Update: Inspire Big Thinking to Launch Our Future
AHIMA Past President/Chair Cassi Birnbaum, MS, RHIA, CPHQ, FAHIMA, presented "Inspire Big Thinking to Launch Our Future". This session described what is going on in the healthcare industry and how AHIMA is responding strategically. To launch the future of HIM, Cassi described AHIMA's goals which include: developing and attracting leaders into HIM; engaging consumers by helping them be aware of their rights and to build trust in the privacy, security and availability of health information; communicating the need for Information Governance in health care; and supporting the development of standards and interoperability.

Through AHIMA's strategic activities, HIM professionals can launch and add value to their organizations. The full report for CSA leaders is available on the AHIMA Engage Community "State Leaders and House of Delegates."
