Get Qualified for the NAP

Wanna win some real money? Get qualified for the NAP -- the only ACBL game where you can earn cash!

The North American Pairs (NAP) is a grassroots event that starts in your local club with qualifying games during the months of June, July and August. Players who have qualified at their club move on to compete at the District Level in October in three flights -- A, B, and C. If successful there, pairs receive a qualification and a subsidy to help defray the cost of a trip to the National NAP event in Kansas City, MO in the spring of 2017.

Aside from the cash award, this event offers great fun and competition. So check with your local club for the qualifying game schedule and get qualified!

"Wine, Beer, Bridge, free food, and Dupli-Swiss are proof that God loves us."   --Ben Franklin

The Unit 141 Newsletter completes its four-part series introducing the 2016 Philadelphia Regional at Valley Forge. The tournament takes place at the DoubleTree hotel in Valley Forge on June 27 to July 3.

This month's article reviews some key logistics and wraps up some miscellaneous details. The link to our website below includes complete information as well as contact information for the Tournament, I/N, and Partnership chairs, should you have additional questions or concerns.

Please be reminded that the Philadelphia Regional follows a 10:30 AM and 3 PM schedule. The slightly later morning start time helps relieve traffic issues for players commuting to the playing site, but still gets them home before dark.

Gold Rush, 199er, Side Games, and Returning Knockouts will be played on the lower level of the hotel. The lecture series will take place in the Hamilton Room, also on the lower level. All other events, including new Knockouts, are scheduled for Grand Ballroom on the main level.

Access to the lower level is via stairs or lift. A doorway at the end of the lower level hallway connects directly to the right-side parking area (as you face the front of the hotel) for convenience and to avoid the stairs or lift.

Join us for a free breakfast every morning except Monday from 9:45 AM to 10:25 AM. Join us each evening from 9 PM to 11 PM in Suite 806 for desserts and drinks. We also offer a complimentary lunch on both Thursday and Sunday.

Players with fewer than 300 masterpoints can register for a special event on Friday. This two-session Swiss Teams event includes a lecture between sessions and free lunch. Eligible players are encouraged to attend this restricted event where the focus is on fun! Space is limited, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Contact I/N Chair Bruce Lang (bruce.edward.lang@gmail.com or 215-312-6221) with questions.

A lecture series runs all week in the Hamilton Room on the lower level. Given by experts, the topics largely focus on subjects for newer players. Wednesday's lectures, however, hold interest for any player looking to start or expand online play. Jane Ball will introduce players of all levels to the many online resources available to bridge players.

Was that Queen Jack Tight? Keeping Up with Bridge Slang

A singleton is "stiff" and doubleton honors are "tight." If you go "toll-free," you've been set for 800; any big set means you've gone for a "telephone number."

Bridge has plenty of appeal just as a game, but its lingo offers a side attraction. Learn more about the language of bridge in Marilyn Hemenway's article, linked here.
Rui's Remarks

Rui Marques, Assistant Chief Director for the European Bridge League and World Bridge Federation and Unit 141 resident, continues his series on bridge rulings and table irregularities.

Three Examples of Insufficient Bids

Last month's article dealt with insufficient bids and promised examples. Here they are:
1 - Auction starts with 1 Club 1 1 . The TD should take the 1 bidder away from the table and ask what happened. The TD will learn that the player didn't see the 1 and thought it was a pass. His hand is Txxx  Axxx  Qxxxx. 1 and 2 are both incontrovertibly not artificial. The TD asks also if the player has a call available that has the same or a more precise meaning than 1 (namely if a negative double would promise 4 cards in hearts , in which case it satisfies the "more precise", or "fully contained within" condition). Supposing the answer is yes, then the TD takes the player back to the table and states: "West can accept 1 Heart . If he does so the bidding continues without further rectification. If not, 1 is cancelled. South can replace it with 2 or with a double, and in both cases the bidding proceeds without further rectification, or with a pass or some other bid. In this case North will have to pass for the rest of the bidding, and lead penalties may apply.
Whenever lead penalties may apply the TD should offer to explain them, stay around until they are applicable. If a lead penalty is coming, intervene before the opening lead to explain the lead penalty options to all players before play begins, and act again when declarer is able to exercise those options.

Card Hand on Right

2 - Auction starts with: 2  2  2 /3 (the player bids 2 and replaces with 3 before you can blink). The TD should take the player away from the table and judge if 2 was unintended (in which case 25A applies and 3 stands) or intended (in which case 2 is an insufficient bid dealt with by Law 27). He should also ask if 2 and 3 are both not artificial and, if not, if 3 has the same or a more precise meaning than 2 , for reasons that are evident below. Let´s suppose that it was intended. Then, Law 27C takes us back to 2 . Next player can accept it (27A1) and bidding continues, or not accept it and the offender must bid 3 (the substitution stands). Now, if 2 and 3 were both incontrovertibly not artificial (27B1a) or if 3 has the same or a more precise meaning than what was intended with 2 (27B1b) the bidding continues normally. If not, then the offender´s partner will have to pass for the rest of the auction.
3 - Auction starts with: 1  1 . The second 1 bidder immediately says "Sorry, I wanted to bid 1 . Oh, I didn´t the opening bid". This is clearly a case for 25A (unintended call), and not 27. There was no pause for thought, so the offender can substitute 1 with a legal call (any). The things he said are authorized information for the opponents and unauthorized for partner.
