Palazzo Vettori, the new home for Kent State Florence

Despite the fact that the building has been open to students since January, Palazzo Vettori was given its official inauguration on a sunny Sunday afternoon, April 17, before a small gathering of local Italian dignitaries and numerous Kent State respresentatives, including Florence students and faculty, executive staff members, trustees and several key donors.

Kent State Receives Grant to Prepare Students for Telemedicine and 3D Printing
The State of Ohio and the Department of Higher Education awarded Kent State University a $510,000 Regionally Aligned Priorities in Delivering Skills grant.
The award is part of a pilot program to bring together business and education partners to fill the growing need for qualified workers in the healthcare industry; specifically, in the areas of telemedicine and additive manufacturing or 3D printing.

Kent State Opens New Center for the Visual Arts
The Center for the Visual Arts, the new home of Kent State University's School of Art, celebrated its grand opening on May 6. The festivities began with a short program, immediately followed by building tours, live entertainment, student exhibitions and refreshments.

KSU Researchers Receive More Than $1 Million in Grants
The National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging awarded Gemma Casadesus-Smith, Ph.D., from Kent State's Department of Biological Sciences, a three-year $444,000 grant to research the mechanisms associated with the benefits of Pramlintide - a synthetic hormone - in models of Alzheimer's disease. Scott Sheridan, Ph.D., from Kent State's Department of Geography, received a three-year $565,000 NASA grant to study climate change through models of water clarity in the Great Lakes.

Congratulations to those of you who completed and passed your examinations earlier this year and more recently graduated from your higher secondary school. Best wishes, too, as you begin your pursuit of a higher education degree which will result in your lifelong vocation and professional passion.

I am proud to say that at its recent Spring 2016 Commencement ceremonies for the Kent campus, Kent State conferred 4,210 degrees, including 3,067 bachelor's degrees, 968 master's degrees,169 doctoral degrees and six educational specialist degrees. Across the university's eight-campus system, A total of 5,226 students graduated, including those receiving associate degrees. As graduates yourselves, now is the time to begin finalizing your options for college and I hope that you plan to pursue an international education. In today's global world, an international experience will not only help you with your career opportunities, it is also a fantastic way to grow into a confident and resourceful individual. In fact, a recent IES study indicates that the benefits of living and learning abroad include:

An incredible milestone for many was celebrated on the evening of May 11 during the International Graduate Student Reception, which was held in the Kent Student Center Ballroom to accommodate the numerous international graduates who were in attendance as well as their family and friends. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Global Education and the Kent State Alumni Association.

The reception also served as the opportunity to present the inaugural edition of the International Community Impact Award, which was presented to Ashish Mondretti, the current president of the Kent Indian Association.

Team India Falls to Team Saudi Arabia in the Quarterfinals of the Global Cup Soccer Tournament
Team Oman is the ultimate winner in Kent State's first international soccer tournament

Kent State Global Cup Soccer Tournament Despite receiving a first-round bye, Team India was eliminated from Kent State's first-ever Global Cup Soccer Tournament by a talented Saudi Arabia team 6 to 0 in a quarterfinal match. The Saudi team eventually lost the Championship Round to Team Oman 6 to 2. Eleven international teams representing four continents and seven countries participated in the tournament.

One special program, which the university offers to truly challenge students to see their world differently, is the International Village Experience (IVE). The International Village Experience is one of the university's several residential living-learning programs. It is unique in that it offers an opportunity for local students to live, study and grow with others from around the world.
