September 2014

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year in Virginia and with its central location, Waynesboro provides easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Skyline Drive and Appalachian Trail.  Take a hike on one of the nearby trails, watch the hawk migration from atop Afton Mountain or fly a kite at Coyner Springs Park - Waynesboro is a charming destination where good nature comes naturally!
Tour de Valley
September 6th

The Tour de Valley Century and Metric Century takes you through miles of scenic and challenging countryside in Augusta and Rockbridge Counties. Starting in Waynesboro's beautiful Ridgeview Park, the course offers abundant mountain, pasture, and river views traveling to Goshen Pass and back. Be a part of this long-standing tradition and come Tour de Valley with us!
Where The Raptors Soar!
A Day at the Hawk Watch
September 14th

Since 1976, the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch has been an official hawk watch site in North America. Every year, during the fall hawk migration period between Aug 15 and Nov 30, volunteers man the hawk watch every day to identify and count all of the migrating hawks that fly down the Blue Ridge Mountains. The location on Afton Mountain is a hot spot for migrating raptors.

This year's Open House will be Sunday, September 14th from 11-3pm on the grounds of the Inn at Afton.  Come see the magnificent hawks make their way south, featuring a presentation by the Wildlife Center of Virginia at 1 pm, and free refreshments!

On peak days in September one can see thousands of hawks flying over in a single day. Last year, 8,202 hawks were counted on September 17th alone, with 24,379 hawks during the whole month of September.  Visitors are welcome to come anytime during the migration season to watch, learn and even help spot hawks in the sky.

Coyner Springs Kite Fly
September 27th

Bring the whole family and join us for a day of fun at Coyner Springs Park.  Gaze as the 100-foot kites take to the sky while enjoying free kite making, parachute races, face painting and old-fashioned hay rides.  Bring your lawn chairs and plan on spending the day!  Food and drinks will be available for purchase.  10-3pm Coyner Springs.

SVAC Annual Fundraiser Gala
