Morning Yoga for Beginners - The William P. Faust Westland Public Library will be having their Morning Yoga for Beginners on Saturday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m. Participants can learn the basics or pick up new pointers from an experienced instructor.  Yoga mats will be provided if needed.  The class is 1 hour and will be held in Meeting rooms A/B.  The Library is located at 6123 Central City Parkway.  

 

Climb Aboard Santa's Polar Express - There will be free rides on Santa's Polar Express train on Saturday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, November 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westland Shopping Center. The rides depart from the station in front of JC Penny.  Westland Shopping Center is located at 35000 Warren Rd.

 

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location. 

 

-The Westland City Council will meet on Monday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

 

-The Housing Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

 

Wayne County Lightfest 8k Fun Run/Walk  - Enjoy a breathtaking run/walk through the Midwest's longest holiday light display.  The Lightfest Run/Walk starts at  Merriman Hollow Park in Westland and ends at Parrendale Park in Dearborn Heights.  There will be shuttle buses to take you back to your car after the run.  The event takes place on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.  The cost to register is $20 until noon on November 17.  Late registrants will pay $25.  Participants of high school age and younger will pay $12 regardless of when they sign up.  Long sleeve shirts and glow-in-the-dark items will be distributed upon check in and post-race food will be available.

 

Bike Through the Lights - Due to popular demand, Wayne County Parks is offering bike riders the chance to bike through the lights on Wedensday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. before Lightfest opens to the public.  This is an out and back event so all bike riders must be able to bike to the Warrendale picnic area and back.  All bikes must have a light, due to the two0way traffic and all participants must wear a helmet.  There will be a prize for the most decorated bike.  Start area and check-in is Hines Park-Merriman Hollow Area, which is between Ann Arbor Trail and Warren Avenue in Westland, 2 1/2 miles south of I-96.  

 

Wayne County Lightfest - The Wayne County Lightfest will be open Thursday, November 20 through December 31 from 7-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6-10 p.m. Friday through Sunday.  Visitors enter Lightfest at Hines Drive and Merriman Road in Westland and exit onto Warren Avenue dear Telegraph.  The address for the Lightfest is 7651 Merriman Road in Westland.  The fee is $5 per vehicle to enter.  Lightfest features more than 47 giant animated holiday themed displays.  Don't forget to visit Santa's Workshop at Warrendale Park at the end of the Lightfest drive.  Santa will be there starting November 26 until December 23, concurrent with the Lightfest hours of operation.  Children can bring letters to Santa to place in a giant mailbox to mail their letters.  Toy Night Tuesdays are November 25, December 2, 9 and 16.  On these nights, the community is invited to bring a new, unwrapped tow in lieu of the $5 vehicle fee.  Toys will be dontaed to the Wayne County Family Center.

 

Friday Night Movie: Pop up History - The Westland Library will have their weekly Friday Night Movie on Friday, November 21.  This week's movie is "Saving Mr. Banks," (Rated PG-13).  This week will have history about the movie and an informal question and answer session with Westland Historical Commission's Jeff Koslowski.  Snacks and refreshments are provided on a donation basis.  Each week also features a trivia contest with small prizes handed out after the movie. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will start at 7:00 p.m.

 

Friday Night Glow Skate - The Mike Modano Ice Arena has re-opened for the season and Friday Night Glow Skate is back.  Glow skate will run every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. and will cost $4 for kids and $5 for adults for residents.  The cost is 50 cents more for non-resident.  Glow in the dark accessories will be available for purchase in the pro shop.  The Ice Arena is located at 6210 Wildwood.

 

Be Proud Be Responsible Workshop - The Westland Youth Assistance Program and Taylor Teen Health Center is hosting a "Be Proud! Be Responsible!" workshop for youth.  Be Proud! Be Responsible! is a pregnancy and HIV/AIDS prevention program for adolescent youth ages 12-18.  It is interactive, fun and most importantly, it works.  The workshop will take place on Saturday, November 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Dorsey Center, located at 32715 Dorsey. All participants will get a free snack in the morning, free lunch and free prizes. For more information or to register, please call the Westand Youth Assistance Program at (734)467-7904.
