June 2014

 ,

Summer is here!  The weather is heating up,  the kids are out of school and more hours of sunlight means more time to play outdoors.  Hui o Ko'olaupoko offers family friendly activities on a monthly basis.  In June, your 'ohana and friends can join us on the 21st and 28th for mauka adventures to help restore native vegetation along stream banks and forested areas. Your efforts will be rewarded with a dip in the icy stream waters and amazing views!
Members of AYSO U12 Boys soccer team and Daisy Troop 789 work to spread mulch and plant natives at a recent
Kaha Garden work day.

Be sure to follow the HOK Like us on Facebook Facebook and Twitter pages, to hear about other upcoming weekday events as well as opportunities from some of our partner organizations. You can also now follow HOK on Instagram to see fun photos from our workdays and the beautiful places HOK volunteers get to work!

Please remember, you can help protect watershed health by treating every street as a stream and every curb as a coastline!

He'eia Stream Restoration

Volunteer Work Day

 Saturday June 21st

9am-12pm

The He'eia Stream Restoration Project is working to address issues of invasive vegetation, eroding stream banks and water quality by restoring native vegetation and installing erosion control measures along 4,000 feet of riparian habitat in upper He'eia Stream. Throughout the past four years, over 4,000 volunteers have donated their time to this project and the removal of invasive species and replanting of native plants.

Workdays at He'eia Stream are held on the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Please view the meeting location map here. Closed-toe shoes are required, long pants, long sleeve shirt and bug spray are recommended. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting wet & muddy.  Bring a water bottle, snack and work gloves if you would like them.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to join HOK projects and RSVP's are always appreciated.  Youth under the age of 16 must have adult supervision and bring a signed copy of the HOK waiver .  More detailed project information can be found on our website or by contacting the HOK Community Coordinator

Hakipu'u Stream Restoration

 Saturday June 28

9am-12pm

The Hakipu'u Stream Restoration began in July 2012 as a partnership between Kualoa Ranch and Hui o Ko'olaupoko.  To date, over 2500 community volunteers and school students have been a part of the efforts to clear invasive species from around the fresh water spring and mauka portions of the stream. Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive plant species, spread mulch and plant native species.  For this month's workday we will continue our major out-planting effort with some easy hand weeding along the stream and hillsides and planting native plants.

Closed-toe shoes are required, long pants, long sleeve shirt and bug spray are recommended.  Bring a water bottle, snack and work gloves if you would like them.  Please wear clothes you don't mind getting wet & muddy.  Bring your green thumb and be prepared to get dirty!

Volunteers of all ages are invited to join all HOK projects.  Youth under the age of 16 must have adult supervision and bring a signed copy of the HOK waiver.

Additional Hakipu'u Stream Restoration workdays for 2014 will be held on August 23, October 25, and December 27 from 9am-12pm.  Spaces for these workdays are limited so please RSVP to reserve your spot and get the meeting location.

 Welcome Danielle

HOK Social Media Intern

Danielle is pursuing a bachelor of arts in Environmental Studies and minor in Global Communication at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU). She is interning with HOK over the summer to work on our social media and community outreach efforts.  She hopes to expand the community's knowledge of our organization and bring more awareness of our goals for ocean health. Danielle has been involved with HOK over the past few years, through stream monitoring activities at He'eia Stream and building rain gardens, she also volunteers at several other organizations throughout Oahu. In the future, she hopes to continue her environmental passion, whether removing invasive species, improving water quality or educating people about the importance of taking care of the environment for our generation and the next.

City & County Hazardous Waste Disposal Day

Some of the products you use at home are potentially hazardous. Safe handling and proper disposal of these materials will protect you, your family and our environment. To aide in the proper disposal of these items, the City & County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services organizes collection dates every two months.  Appointments for drop-off must be made one week prior to each event by calling 768-3201.  The upcoming drop off date is July 12th, so be sure to call before July 3rd to set up an appointment to drop off any hazardous waste.

For a full list of accepted waste and what can be disposed of at home, visit The Department of Environmental Services website.
