November News

November is not only the beginning of the close for the semester; it is also a month for celebration, home cooked meals and more studying. Students are moving past midterms into the final stretch. If any of you have students that will graduate this fall, we know you are filled with excitement and joy knowing your student will move on to the next chapter in their lives. Those of you who have continuing students, now is the time for them to sign up for the spring, and have a serious conversation with their academic advisor about the next semster. And then, there are FINALS! Hopefully all of your students have found the resources they need on campus to help them succeed inside and outside the classroom; if not we have some information in this newsletter to help you out.

We will be beginning the month with Homecoming! This year's theme is the Mean Green Circus. Two weeks later we will have our Goodie Box stuffing party and finally the next week will be Thanksgiving break. Your student is coming back to celebrate the holiday with you and gain that lasting encouragement before they begin taking their final exams to end the semester.

We look forward to seeing you at these events and showing off your Mean Green Spirit! Also, if you know of any potential Eagles, UNT Preview will be November 22nd. Students can come to campus and have an experience of what it would be like to be part of the Mean Green!

Homecoming 2014

Homecoming 2014 will take place from November 3-8. This year's theme is "The Greatest Homecoming on Earth: Mean Green Circus". Mean Green fans can attend and participate in traditional Homecoming events, such as the Bonfire, the Parade, and not to forget the numerous giveaways throughout the week. The week's activities end with the Mean Green taking on Florida Atlantic at Apogee Stadium on November 8th. Here is a full schedule of the Homecoming Week activities.

Please join us as representatives of our UNT Parent Association, in "walking" the UNT parade route. We are continuing our new tradition of accompanying our float entered in the parade.

A big Thank You to Cindy and Matt Cravey, for donating their truck, trailer and decorations. The judging of our float will start at 11:15 PM and we ask that you arrive no later than 10:00 AM if you want to be part of the float, prior to the judging. If you just want to arrive and walk the parade route, then please arrive by 12:00 PM so you have ample time to find parking and be ready to go for the start of the parade at 1:00 PM.

Please come dressed in your green and white. Circus related attire, funny hats, glasses, hair and noise makers assist in making our float even better and will be counted towards the judging. Noisemakers are welcomed with the exception of air horns. We will have footballs and green beads to distribute and ask that you please bring candy to distribute along the parade route. Post Halloween candy is what has been suggested to be cost effective. Also, it should be noted the candy and give away's must be "handed out" along the parade route and not thrown.

There will be a Parent Association Tailgate after the parade and before the game at the bottom of "The Hill" at Apogee. Considering this event is after the parade, you don't have to bring too much food to share, but rather come and gather to show your Mean Green Pride and meet with other parents before the game. Click here to let us know who's coming to the tailgate and what you will bring.

If you are interested in participating in the parade, please email parents@unt.edu. Don't forget to check the "Events" section of the Parent Association Facebook Page and click "Join" on the Homecoming Parade event to keep up-to-date with the event!

Goodie Box Stuffing

Parent Association members will be stuffing Finals Goodie Boxes the UNT Alumni Center, in the Gateway Center, at 8:00 AM on Saturday, November 22nd. There will be hundreds of goodie boxes to fill and we'll need as many volunteers as possible! If you have not signed up to volunteer or want to volunteer a friend for goodie box stuffing, please click here or email [email protected].

There are several areas to park near the Alumni Center, including Fouts Field (the stadium). However, be mindful that there will be a $10 fee to park at Fouts Field because of the UNT Football game. Also, do not forget, the Parent Association will be tailgating for the football game, so feel free to stick around and join us for some more fun.

Welcoming Your College Student Home

"Your college student is coming home for his first real visit since [they] headed off to college. You're excited - but also a bit nervous about what to expect. You know that [they have] changed - increased independence and responsibility are goals of the college experience. But you may not be sure how this increased independence will affect your relationship. Your college student is probably nervous, too. [They] can't wait to come home to show off his new found independence, but [they're] not sure how [they] will fit in with the family now."
- College Parents of America

Health, Wellness, and Self-Care

The Student Health and Wellness Center is a great resource for providing to our students information about staying healthy and finding ways to manage/improve self-care.

Check out this piece on Exercise and Sleep on their website. This is something that may be useful for your student, especially if they sound a little more tired than usual.

Is your student stressed? Do they talk of needing a way to relieve the tension they're feeling? To help alleviate that stress, the Meadows Center for Health Resources works with two Licensed Massage Therapists, offering Massage Therapy Services at a discounted rate for students.
